      track tires

      Appreciate feedback on this tire for road racing.

      I like the Nitto NT05 better for handling

      NT05's are nowhere near as aggressive as 888's. The Nitto NT01 would make for a more comparable (though erring more on the aggressive side) alternative. Treadwear ratings aren't perfect metrics when comparing different tire makers, but they're a pretty good guideline. You see, NT05's have a UTGQ rating of 200 while the 888's are rated at 100. The 888's wear roughly twice as quickly as a result of a stickier, more aggressive compound.


      I have not driven any car with either of these tires.

      888's are quite popular at NASA events (as are other Toyo tires since Toyo is a sponsor) and seem well accepted, which seems like a pretty good sign to me. The 888 is what many of the American Iron race cars run.


      Rupp has run Bad Penny on 888's with some success. I believe Penny was on 888's when it won the first optima Ultimate Street Car Invitational for what that's worth. Long story short, I hope Rupp or someone with actual hands on experience with 888's chimes in.

      Other DOT legal R compound tire options include, but are not limited to the BF Goodrich R1 and the Hoosier A6.

      FWIW, not personal experience, but I was just talking to a customer who has run the Hoosier A6 and Toyo 888's back to back on his car and while he says that the Toyo's don't grab quite as hard as the A6's do, they tend to be more forgiving when they do start to let go. He compared it more to a street tire in that regard whereas the Hoosier's were great until you were off in the infield with little to no warning. This is all mounted on a 4200# Impala SS motivated by a stroked LT1, C6 Corvette binders, which gets beaten relentlessly around VIR(www.virnow.com) in Virgina on a somewhat regular basis.

      I'm placing the order for 6 Toyos now which may lighten the checkbook a bit but, thanks to you pro-touring enablers, I will definitely sleep better tonight. The car is used for club racing, about 10 events a year. I do it for fun, the adreniline rush and friends. The car is a '93 Vette that was setup for drags so we're taking the winter to modify it for road racing. Its got adjustable QA1s at all corners so with some shock adjustment, playing with the camber, new springs and tires we hope to be ready for the track for a kickoff in April. Its got the juice, with a Nelson Racing 396ci LT4. It dynoed at over 400 hp & ft/lbs at the wheels. Thanks for all the feedback.

      good year is now making a dot type race tire in a 315/35 and a 275/40 17.They hook real hard and if the chassis is right will scare the hell out of ya!
