      is this bad etiquette?

Hi, I'm in love with the Motiv8r paint scheme. The hood looks awesome with the black and red pin stripe that expands with logo. My car is a 68 mustang coupe that I would like to paint the hood similar. Is it bad to copy such a well known car? Also should I ask Larry about what he feels about me using the same hood design? Don't want to step on toes.

      Thanks,
      Brian

Why not use it more as motivation/inspiration for your own design? While not really " bad etiquette " per se, IMO at least, it's kinda boring to do a straight- out copy...

Maybe something that plays more into the way the grille lines flow back into the hood on a stang? I dunno. I just make this stuff up as I go.

Brian- I'd ask Larry about that, I'm sure he'd be flattered. I designed the paint scheme on the car and I'm glad you like it. While I was working on that, I was also working on Steve Rupp's "Track Rat" and Bill Panouses's "Evade". All were 68 Camaros, all had the same Carbon Fiber parts and all wanted something unique that showed off the those parts. That was a major challenge but they all have their own identity I think.

I can help you on your project as well if you're interested. Maybe we can find something that has a similar look to MotiV8r while working off the Mustang lines. Please send me an email, PM or give me a call anytime to discuss budget and your vision. I'd be happy to help.

      My attitude is

"Plagiarism is the purest form of flattery."

If I had any other opinion I would ge pissed everyday in this business.

MotiV8r has already been copied a few times, or we copied another?

It is nearly impossible to dream up something different that has not already been done on a Camaro. But your doing a Mustang, so I say go for it. I am sure Larry will say the same thing

unless larry doesn't want you to do it, i say go for it. you're not ripping it off, this post prove this. and you're not building the same car so no matter how close the paint/design is, it will look different.

I'm with these guys. Using it as a basis for designing something a bit different that works better on the Mustang front end, would be my approach. It's definitely worth it to spend a couple bucks to have a rendering, instead of having a car you aren't happy with after dropping $10K+ on paint.

How do you like Juneau, and what's the car scene like up there? I was born in Fairbanks and lived in Anchorage as well. I miss the place every day.

A lot of people seem to want to copy my paint theme. You'd think one of these days primer would go out of style. Sigh:bsjerk:

      Why not?

Someone has already copied the graphic pattern but on a darker colored car.

Since I don't have time to plan it out with Hermance, I'll do some kind of combo of Evader and Motiv8r. Madmax, there isn't a pro-touring/restomod scene here at all. This will be the only one in town. The rest are mostly restorations with slight mods.

Ben, I'm glad you did Evade.. I thought there was a rip-off artist out there somewhere!

Yes, while its the best form of flattery, copying is pretty lame IMO. Now being inspired by someone is a whole different story. I'd suggest using Ben's work as inspiration and coming up something original that you like and might inspire others. Either that or hire Ben to do your Mustang. It's a whole different animal and deserves something new instead of 'been there seen that'.

I think the Mustang hood is perfectly suited for the MotiV8r hood treatment. There is a break line on that hood that may work even better then the Camaro hood. It is a completely different car. I Mustangs often came with a Matte black hood detail you just doing it in CF.

      No problems here.
