      BBC Head Choice

I am putting together a 468 for my 69 Camaro and I have narrowed my head choice to AFR 305cc Magnum or Brodix RR rect port. Anyone with either of these heads input please. www.photobucket.com/dantesrides

I have not used the Brodix Race Ready Rect Ports. But I have used the BB-2 Rect Port heads.

This is the only BBC combo I have ever used, so I might not be the best person to talk to. But I am very happy with mine, other than I needed to have custom headers build for them to fit correctly. But with the new Race Ready heads I believe they built them with the stock height exhaust ports so that is no longer a concern.

My combo is Team G intake manifold
Holley 830 Carb flowed to 1050 CFM
Full solid Roller set up with a Crane Custom Cam that has .711 /.711 Lift. (so I needed to go with an extra heavy duty spring)

But I have heard good things about the AFR heads…

What else is in your combo?

I have the Race Rite oval ports...I've only ran it on a test stand, so I can't comment on the power yet.

Out of the two you've chosen, my understanding is the AFR is a better performing head, but the exhaust ports have been raised which could affect header fitment. For my use, the possible hassle wasn't worth it to me.

The performance section of Team Chevelle is mostly big block guys...I'd search there and see what they say is the latest and greatest.

I bought be Race Rites through Mike Lewis from Lewis racing engines (another Team Chevelle guy). His pricing was good and he was helpful in selecting the correct spring package for my cam. Mine are 115cc with the CNC chambers.

Again, I can't say how well they work compared to other heads, but the Brodix's are certainly a nice quality part.

Thanks for the input guys. Being that I have a brand new pair of Hooker coated headers I think I'll go with the Brodix as not to have to deal with fit issues. Thanks .www.photobucket.com/dantesrides

I have the AFR 305's on my Chevelle and the Brodix Race Rite rectangle port on my Elky. They both make pretty good power for having small hydraulic roller cams. You can't go wrong with either.

The only down side is the AFR's have raised exhaust ports which will require custom headers.

You could also consider the Trick Flow heads. PHR made very good power with them-they are pretty hard to beat for the price:

The article from PHR is here:

Has AFR changed their design. I have magnum 305 heads on my 402bbc and im running a stock hooker coated header. The heads are probably 5 or 6 years old.

running the AFR 325 magnums on my 496. heads fit great, had the heads milled to bump up the compression a little. headers fit with no major issues, currently using crappy patriots, will be ordering up a set of Lemons in the near future. no complaints from here....

This is a good cylinder head especially when used with a stick shift transmission, if you can afford it have them pocket port them

AFR all the way, talk to AFR give them all specs and follow their suggestions AS for Brodix all I have seen is last years crap port design, best flowing Brodix I have ever seen were bought bare un ported and the head porter did ALL the work, said he would not use Brodix machined heads.
As for me on street I only build oval port heads most times I have put rectangles on street builds they lacked bottom end over ovals even with all the tricks to boost bottom end.

I have the Brodix RR-Os. I think AFR, Brodix or Dart and as long as they are sized to your engine combination you can't go wrong.

The Engine Masters series which focuses on low RPM torque and power (2500-6500) was usually won using Brodix BB heads with a Dart single plane manifold and either a 5150 or 4500 style carb (Holley or Demon) and unleaded premium fuel when a Chevy Big Block won the event. This doesn't follow the conventional wisdom and advice given in most forums. These results where "real life" not theoretical. I'm not saying that there aren't other good heads out there (Trick Flow, Air Flow, Dart, ect.)

PS, my brother worked for Air Flow when Warren Brownfield owned it.

Whats up guys? I have been off the forum for a while but I ended up ordering a set of Brodix Race Rite CNCd rectangular heads for my 468. Funny thing, the CNCd heads are cheaper than the stock ones.
