      N00b Question

Ok so im not exactly a n00b but with engines i am. Anyways my brother has a 1972 Chevelle with a 454 and an automatic. Anyways he'll be away for awhile unfortunately anyways because this and his other car are sitting at my moms house, I have been given the duty to get both cars sold.

Problem 1: Apparently he bent a pushrod sometime so those need to be replaced. I have never changed pushrods but am pretty quick learning so I'm just wondering what besides basic tools do i need to change the pushrods out and a little general info on what to do like order or anything.

Problem 2: His car idles at 30mph dont ask me how im not sure but i would think this would be a carb issue which he has an edelbrock 800cfm with electric choke. If its something else let me know.

Any help with these problems would be greatly appreciated and would help me fund my project because i will end up getting some of the proceeds for my time.

Pull the valvecovers. The rocker arms have a 5/8" adjusting nut that needs to be loosened a few turns until it can be lifted and spun off the pushrod. The old pushrod just pulls right out. When you slide the new pushrod in, just make sure it seats in the lifter cup. If you back the nut off 2 turns, then re-tighten 2 turns. After you replace the pushrods, start the engine. One at a time, back off one adjusting nut until it starts clacking a bit then retighten 1/4 - 1/2 turn. When you've adjusted all valves, re-install valvecovers. Now would be a good time to throw on some new valvecover gaskets, too.

The high idle could be a number of things. Check vacuum hoses for cracks or unplugged, make sure the cam on the choke isn't keeping the idle up. Check the timing. Make sure the idle adjustment screw isn't screwed in too far.

Have you determined why it bent the pushrods in the first place ?, if just the exhaust are bent the timing chain might be worn and jumped a tooth and retarded the camshaft enough to bend the exhaust push rods, if it is the exhaust pushrods that are bent you had better do a leak down on each cylinder to check for bent valves.
