      Steering box wear???

Do steering boxes tend to wear out? I found one that I want to use from a 3rd Gen IROC and put on my 1st gen camaro, it has 168,000 miles on it. Should I be concerned about slop or wear from that amount of milage or do steering box's tend to hold up decent overall?

Yes they wear. I've found a lot more wear on pickup truck boxes than on Camaros though. Gear lash can be adjusted for on the main adj screw, but it can't make up for a completely worn out box, the balls and lead screw can wear and that isn't adjustable. There is an adjustable plug on the top of the box too.

You can just buy a rebuilt third gen box and either swap any core or pay the core charge, then you are starting fresh. I'd like to have a box with less than 80k to 100k miles on it or I'd consider a rebuilt or new box. It mainly depends on your pocketbook.
67 Camaro RS that will be faster than anything Mary owns.
