      67 Pontiac Tempest

hey guys , well i got my hands on a 67 pontiac tempest with a 400 and a muncie m-21 back when i was stationed in san diego , now that i am out of the military and back in va i have decided to completely strip it and build a pro touring car . I will keep the 400 block for now and most likely add butler heads and a nicer cam and if budget allows forged internals

the frame is being sand blasted and powder coated at the moment and as soon as that is done i will add my full hotchkis suspension and the moser 12 bolt with 3:73s

i bought willwood breaks all around

now here are some questions , anyone ever seen a 67 pontiac tempest/gto/LeMans with flared fenders ?

i would like to fit 10 inch wide wheels all around but from reading and talking to other 67 owners the most without mini tubing it the car can fit 9's in the rear and 8's in the front , so i wonder if flaring it will allow me to fit 10s all around

another question is , is the muncie m-21 and good idea or should i look at a t56 , the muncie is a close ratio
i will be installing american powertrain hydraulic clutch to make the operation smoother

      any input will be appreciated

I just put 9's on the back with a 275 tire (10.8" wide) I think that you could run a 10 in the back with a 285 if you had the perfect offset. You would also need to cut out or push out the ledge on the inside of the outer fender well above the lip to create a little more room on the outside.

I have 8's in the front with a 245 and I think that maybe a 255 on a 9 with the perfect offset would be the widest possible there. Good luck!

i talked to a body shop today and the solution we came up with is to extend the inner fender wells and move the trunk latches , this will require the frame to be narrowed

ps it wont let me post pictures saying it needs a moderator to be approved

i still need to weld a bit more and grind alot more to get the edges nice and smooth , hopefully around may i will be able to pick up the engine and then order the transmission if my wallet allows me ,

after that i will be buying all the sheet metal and chrome parts to test fit everything , then a few layers of primer and a bit of sanding then she should be ready for paint in 2016

Looking good, you'll love the 461, i love mine. 3.73's are a bit much though unless you got overdrive. Poncho motors make good torque and don't see any real benifits from anything higher numericaly than a 3.42... i even went so far as to swap out the 3.55 gears in my 12 bolt for some 2.56 gears and with a 275 35 18 tire top speed is theoreticaly 165 at 5500 rpm... but i know for sure that hitting 150+ in a half mile stretch isn't in any way a problem for the 461 in my firebird.

Keep us updated, that tempest looks nice

thank you guys , this is gonna be a long term project so updates might be a little slow , but the plan is by this year to have all the sheet metal done plus transmission and engine
