Disc MCs
Are there are any real differences (other than some kind of residual rubber valve)between disc and drum MCs?

Well it depends on the wheel cylinder diameter and the particular car, but the major differences (besides residual valve pressure), tend to be the piston diameter and reservoir volume. Discs require more volume than drums, as well as more pressure.
Just make sure to check all your measurements and make sure your ideal clamping force bias, based on your calculations, from front to rear is what you want before you set anything in stone. If your calculations land you pretty close your real-world results shouldn't be terribly far off.
