There's certainly a number of options.

3D Studio Max sticks out in my head.

I know there's stuff out there for Mac's as well. 3ds is the only piece of software I've seen or used.

Hopefully some of the designers will pop in.

I'm sure the serious professional rendering artists will pipe in, but it kinda depends on the kind of rendering. Some guys still do it all by hand (ink, airbrush, paints, whatever). Some guys do some stuff by hand and then augment/alter using image creation/processing software like Photoshop and Illustrator. Some guys use software like Photoshop and Illustrator to process digital/digitized pictures. And then there are the guys that do everything digitally, starting with 3D modeling and post processing with software like Photoshop and Illustrator.

BTW, you might check out the multimedia forum for more info and threads on this kinda thing.

I use Photoshop for all of my renderings. Pretty easy program to use and work with, and get's the job done pretty well
These are all done by me in Photoshop.

If your on a Mac, I would recommend Maxon Cinema 4D for a 3D App, it's a lot easier to pick up than Maya. Either way, you will want Photoshop for final touchup.

You can get some pretty decent 3D Models of popular cars on places like TurboSquid. Here is a 68 Camaro for example...

If you want to start with free software, you can try Blender (http://www.blender.org/), it's open source and pretty powerful, though not as polished as the commercial apps.

For render engines mentalray is...meh. Vray is pretty much the industry leader now adays. If you can get a good hdri then you are golden.

Maya and Max are commonplace, modo is up and coming and is getting a lot of buzz with their 3d modeling, but they only have a vray beta right now.

turbosquid is hit and miss. there are some great models and some are absolute junk. if anyone wants me to take a quick look at a potential model, feel free to hit me up. (credentials: I'm a 3d modeler for feature films. I've built Iron Man suits, real steel robots, Transformers etc..)

I've seen the before and after on those photochops, nice work Coppertop!

I used to use Photoshop to "paint" my renderings but I found that it was less complicated, easier and faster to work with Adobe Illustrator. The challenge there is Illustrator is a 2-d graphic design program so it took some trial and error to figure out how to really get a nice look without looking like a flat and/or graphic image. You can see what I mean in the truck rendering, the top design ideas are more of the look and style of what Illustrator is typically used for and the main view although still Illustrator, is the style and look I used to get out of Photoshop.

      Here's a couple samples...

The vette still needs a few touch ups, but I still like it as well.
