Well iv'e had some more goodies show up. The next few things up on the list are Brakes, wheels and tires.....

If you've been keeping up with my thread you'll notice this is the second big brake kit Iv'e gotten for the GTO. I sold the TRSD kit to a PY guy and moved on the these. I think the TRSD kit would have worked well and it was very nice but after some conversations with Tobin and others, I decided this was the right move to make.

Some more brake parts show up the last few days. My front brakes are partially from Kore3.com. I'm sure iv'e said it before but Tobin @ Kore3 is awesome. The guy is a wealth of knowledge, promptly answered every email I sent and at this stage of the game, nothing gets me to buy like knowledge and top shelf customer service. Its worth every penny.

-So the front brakes are basically 2012 Corvette C6-Z51. The Z51 rotors are a 13.4" diameter and 32mm thick and a step up from the standard 12.7" C6 rotor for just a little more money. I opted for Stoptech slotted rotors. I found that they sell matching LS1 rears and Z51 fronts. This was hard to find. Since Tobin doesn't sell these I google shopped them and then beat Summit racing up on the price like I always do. They price matched and shipped free staying good to their word...and I really beat them up on these.

There are a couple reasons these are hard to match front and rear. First the Z51 is a totally different rotor than the stock C6. Also while the LS1 rear calipers are the same thing as C5/6 and the LS1 rotors have the same dimensions as C5, the LS1 rear e-brake setup is a bit different, so C5 rotors wont work. I also decided to steer away from drilled rotors. According to everyone that's ever tracked a car, a drilled rotor is prone to cracking under lots of stress and are really just a bling thing. Slots are functional and remove gasses.

-The brackets are Tobin's standard C5/C6 bracket.

-The calipers are twin 40.5mm piston aluminum C6. Though similar in appearance, the C6 are more rigid than the C5. The abutments are Z51 and allow for the extra rotor area.

-I also got Tobins flexcore stainless flex lines for the whole car. They appear to be top notch and the C5/C6 rear lines they sell will work with the LS1 calipers since they are basically the same thing.

-Since I intend to go to the AFX aluminum spindle/hub eventually I didn't want to spend the $300 bucks on Tobin's sweet ass aluminum hubs. I found out that stock drum brake hubs will work as long as they are under 5.95" in diameter. Most stockers will need to be turned down though. I bought some brand new ones from CPP for $55 bucks with bearings, caps and hardware. I was pleased to find that they were already at 5.95" in diameter!! After sticking in some American bearings, longer wheel studs and painting them....ill probably have $100 total, saving $200 bucks tward the AFX spindles/hubs/arms later on.

-Brake pads are Hawk HPS {High Performance Street} Recommended by Tobin.

I also picked up some ebay LS1 2002 Camaro rear brakes. I'm going to blast and paint them. Rebuild the calipers with new seals and pins and run them.

      Here's some pics!...

I'll be actuating the new brakes with a Detroit Speed and Engineering "TYPE" of 9" dual diaphragm power brake booster and an aluminum 1" master cylinder. Notice I said "TYPE". Its not from DSE. I did some looking and found the part #'s I believe DSE uses and collected parts on my own through Amazon, eBay and Summit and put it together for $175 less than DSE wants for the exact same thing. If you're interested ill show you how!

So let me start with the booster/master combo....

This is a Tuff Stuff 9" dual diaphragm, black powder coated, power booster, powder coated mounts and Wilwood adjustable proportioning valve/mount through Summit. On it, sits an ACDelco 18M974 aluminum master cylinder with plastic reservoir and screw on cap from a right hand drive 2000 S-10. I got this through Amazon dirt cheap. The pedal clevis/extension comes from Pirate Jack on eBay. This is what Tobin @ Kore3 says will work best with the Z51 Vette/LS1 rear style brakes and pretty much what GM ran from the factory on these cars...and it will bolt right in!

      A couple of pics...

Oh nice nice. Those look like my c5 calipers, but your rotors are even bigger. You'll love the rear ls brakes, very simple to install and they work awsome. Same with the wilwood adjustable piece, you'll love that.

Btw do you then have the option to use the z06 mono block 6 piston calipers later?

Yeah I'm really hoping to at least get my feet wet this year with the auto x. I was really hoping for Goodguys in DSM but I guess we will see? Iv'e got to get the brakes installed and wheels ordered soon to make that happen!

I don't think the wheels i'm ordering will have the clearance for the Z06 stuff unfortunately. According to the templates i saw on the Kore 3 website those calipers are massive. I think the only guys iv'e seen running them have forged wheels and forged wheels are just not my thing for this car. I'm about 90% certain i'm going with a retro looking cast billet specialty mag-G.

Dan where do you find the dates for these events? The only dates I could find for Hawkeye is June 22nd and July 27th. Im only a few miles from this track so there is no reason I should miss any of these.

Well to be totally honest, im not really a big fan of them. I don't mind them on other guys cars and they do have a retro look but they just arent right for mine.

I friggen love this car. This car was why I chose the MAG Gs' the only difference is that mine will have a bit taller tires front and rear. The above car is running 245/40/18's and 255/45/18's. I want to run Nitto555's in a 245/45/18 @26.7" tall in the front and a 265/50/18 in the rear @ 28.4" tall. It should give just about the same rake as this car and fill the wells up a bit more with plenty of clearance. Contrary to most PT folks... I think the 67' GTO's almost have to have a bit of rake to look right. Not a lot....just a touch.

Some pretty impressive GTO's on this thread. I went with Kore3 brakes on mine, and am very happy with the whole package. I went with the Z06 set up front and rear, here are some pics of the rotor mockup. The Flexcore hoses that Tobin makes up are really nice, he made a set with -3 AN fittings for my deal.

I haven't decided on wheels yet, but I think we are going to have to CNC up some custom 18" wheels. The tires are 335-18 for the rear, and 295-18 for the fronts, we are going to try and CNC machine a Pontiac Ralley I in 18 x 12 for the rears and 18 x 10 for the fronts. We'll use the factory inner caps.

Sure like the rims in the 1967 above, you just gotta love a lowered GTO with the right stance-nothing better.

holy crap, those are awsome. Now i want a set. also, if i'm correct thats the rotor for the opposit side? or does that matter? Do they use the same bracket as the c5 corvette calipers? Or only their own bracket?

btw this is where i officialy invite you to PLEASE start a build thread. I GOTTA see this monster you are working on...

Thanks for the comment. RS uses factory C6 front spindles, so these brakes drop right in. The calipers can go on either side, but you want to be sure the bleed ports are facing up. You can see the two ports in both photos with the black rubber plugs.

One thing we're going to try which is a little out of the box, is we're using manual (no power) brakes. The original plan was for hydro-boost, but after talking to Tobin we're going to try manual brakes. He sent the master cylinder with the correct bore size for manual brakes, so we'll see.

The reason is to get good pedal feel and brake modulation for auto cross.

I run manual brakes with C6 Z06 front and LS1 rears. Works very well. I started with a 15/16" bore MC, but have since moved to a 7/8" bore Mopar MC and like the change.
