T-56 Switch Question
I have a T-56 Magnum that I need to wire up the speedo, back-up lamps and reverse lockout.
Do I need to use a relay for the back-up lamps or can the switch handle a 2 or 3 amp circuit?
How much current does the reverse lockout need? I plan to wire it to the brake light circuit, but I need to know if the brake circuit can handle it or do I need a relay. If the switch needs less than 3 amps, I can add it to the brake light circuit.

I just wired these up on my LT1 T-56 in my '87 Olds.
On the backup lamps, all I did was cut theoriginal connector that went to the steering column and ran the power to one side of the switch and the wire to the lamps to the other. The switch seems to handle this just fine.
For the reverse lockout I wired it to a lighted rocker switch that I plan to have in my ashtray next to the shifter. I am pulling a switched 12v from an original wire that was originally installed in my console. Works just fine with no relays on either one.Andrew

10-05-2009 #5I have no clue what the amperage draw is on the rev lockout but I had mine wired into the brake light wire with no problems. Convienent, that way when you hit the brakes it activates the lockout.

The reason I didn't want to wire the reverse lockout into the brakes is that I was concerned it would over work the reverse lockout unnecissarily.

In the F-body's it was controlled through the ECM and VSS. The ECM would energize the solenoid when the vehicles speed was less than 5 mph and would then close it when above that.
An electrical engineer friend of mine is going to look at making a small circuit that would us the T-56 vss signal to engage the reverse lockout. But that's going to take a while to figure out.Andrew

not to mention if you have it triggering off the brake pedal...thats gonna be alot of useless triggering... might burn it out erly. i saw that question on here before a year or 2 back...pedal trick was not a good idea...i myself have it hooked up to a micro switch on the left side of my column...easy reach and my hand doesn't go far from the wheel...Wayne S
