My engine trouble
I recently tore down my 350 engine out of my camaro the main bearings were down to copper and there was some wear in the the oil pump housing. I am concerned that this was a result of the distributor being to tall for the engine and getting tightened down and putting too much pressure on the oil pump shaft. So I measured from the intake down to the oil pump shaft and the the distributor shaft, and that checks out so I was also concerned about the wear on the gear it doesn't look so bad either it isn't quite in the middle though. I don't want to ruin another oil pump because of the distributor has anyone had any experience with this?

08-16-2009 #2Distributor length should not be an issue at all, and would not cause the main bearings to wear at all. Let's assume it was too long, the distributor would not lock down and marry the pump correctly, too short it would not engage. Even if it was 1 mm too long and you forced it down as best you could, that would not cause the main bearings to wear, but perhaps premature wear on the impeller gears. My main concern would be the cam gear if it was not seated,a nd one fo the gears would break, most likely not the cam gear-lol. Can you post picures of what you are referring to? I have rebuilt a lot of 350 Chevys myself. Gary
