      t-56 shifting question

Went with a friend to check out a t-56 transmission today. It was unhooked and out of the car but as he shifted through the gears for a quick little test it would not go into reverse. Is this normal with it out of the car? I didn't think it was but I wasn't sure.

There is a reverse lockout solenoid that keeps it from going into reverse unless energized. Once energized it will go in easily. You can muscle it & over ride the solenoid though. In a factory setup the PCM energizes this solenoid if going less than 5mph, that way you don't accidently hit R when going from 4th to 5th.

O.K. Cool thanks. I was pretty sure the transmission was in working order since I saw the car with it in it driving around about a week or so ago and knew the guy. I didn't think he'd pull one over on us but we went out there by ourselves and he left his shop open for us while he was out.
