chevelle overdrive gears ?
my father-in-law has a 68 chevelle with a 350 ci motor that is not original to the car. he put 373 gears in it but they are not what he needs for an old grocery getter that is really just a nice daily driver. he was wanting to change the gears so it could cruise around 60 on state routes. does anyone have any idea what gears he needs to change to. any help is appreciated.

07-24-2009 #2A set of 3.23 gears would be perfect for 60 MPH driving. Good acceleration around town too.
The 3.23s are a great all-around gear used in a lot of the older musclecars as the standard rear end ratio.
07-24-2009 #3I agree that the 3.36 would be a good gear ('68 Chevelle has the 8.2 10 bolt which uses 3.36 instead of 3.23). It would still perform well, but cruise down the highway much better than the 3.73. The gears are $180 plus shipping. I also recommend the $92 installation kit which has all of the shims, bearings, seal, pinion nut, crush spacer and other parts needed to put the gears in and set them up correctly.
