      10 bolt....?

I have a 10 bolt posi in my 80 camaro, I was wondering if I should save some money and keep it or pick up a 12 bolt from the junkyard...either way I'd be building both up just wondering if the 10 bolt could handle what a 12 bolt does and where can I start looking for parts for the 10 bolt

I believe yours would be a 8.5 which is the strongest of the 10 bolts. From what I understand they are nearly as stout as the 12 bolt. You can get parts from Summit, Jegs, Moser, and Randy's Ring & Pinion among plenty of other places.

Yes you can build these. But you need to way your options, cost buying a 12 to rebuilding your 10. Remember the Grand nationals came out with the 8.5, and they are a hot comodity amoung the g-body crowd. If your are not running huge horsepower/torque numbers I would just stick with the 10 bolt. Just my 2 cents.

Your car should have the 8.5 rear end. This rear end can be built plenty strong. The parts list that I recommend is 30 spline Eaton Posi, 30 spline Moser axles, installation kit with Timken bearings, quality gear set. I also recommend welding the axle tubes if sticky tires and a lot of torque will be applied to this rear end. There is a very good thread on nastyz28.com about welding the tubes. All of this comes in at around $100 to $1200 for parts.

A junkyard 12 bolt for a Camaro doesn't exist anymore. If you pick up a 12 bolt in the junk yeard it's going to be a truck 12 bolt. You can build these to fit your car, but there are a lot of modifications to be made so that it will fit. You will spend more money fixing it than you would building the rear end that you have now, for a slight improvement in strength.

Then there is the Moser 12 bolt. The Moser starts at $1900 plus shipping, which has an Eaton Posi and a lot of real good parts inside.

OK, 700 HP is a lot to put on the 8.5. You might want to go with something a little stronger. If it doesn't make a lot of torque then the 8.5 might be fine, but if it does then you will probably break it. If you don't use anything but street tires then you will probably be all right.

The Moser 12 bolt woudl be a good choice for this. A well built 9 inch Ford or Dana 60 would be even better. The Dana would be cheaper, starting at around $1900.

The 7.5 wasn't used in the Camaro until '82.

Using a big torque monster like a big block. Then yes up grade. There are some company's out there that are selling bolt in 9". I am running a bolt in 9" in my chevelle. You can get some off of e-bay for alot less, than strange. Then all you will need is a pumpkin and brakes. Just find a good pumpkin with a track lock, and some rear brakes from speedway motors that wont break the bank.

Alot depends on what you are wanting to do with the car. Drag race, cruiser, street race, what ever. Remember that a 9" is alot easier to change the gear ratio in. Just put a new pumpkin in with a different gear ratio.

Sorry havent been on in a few days...work ties me up a bit, but I love coming back to all this info heh...yea I havent started buying anything yet and I'm stuck between the 9in and the 12 bolt...the car is pretty much going to be a weekend warrior but I would like to drive it from time to time during the week and just cruise with it, I was ultimately thinking 4:10's but what do you guys think? Theres no doubt now that i have to upgrade b/c my buddy blew up his motor on his chevelle and sold me his turbo for dirt cheap so i'm going to be looking to turbo it in the next year or so

What about a Dana 60? It's as strong as a 9 inch and cheaper. It's also lighter. A complete Dana 60 with 35 spline axles, Detroit Locker, 1350 yoke and 4.10 gears is $2300 plus shipping. A 9 inch with the same parts is $2400 plus shipping. I don't think the 12 bolt is going to hold up to 700 HP plus the turbo.

Well there is a ton of old f-250s in the junkyard up the street and I know a guy who narrows them...or should I just go with a new one?

If you go with a used Dana 60 be sure that the housing is good. The Dana 60 tends to spin the left differetnial bearing in the housing and this eats up the housing. The new ones are stronger due to improvements in the casting and axle tube material.

You need to check the width and pinion offset first. If these are not correct then the houisng will require modifications to correct them. The total width is 61 inches and the pinion offset is 1/2 inch off center to the right. This means that the distance from the pinion to the right end is 1 inch shorter than the left. If this is correct then you will need a set of Camaro spring perches. You will also need a yoke to adapt it to your drive shaft. You will need a set of axles with the correct bolt pattern for your wheels, or a set of wheels with the correct bolt pattern for these alxes.
