      New pooch!!

      Hey guys,

I know we have a few dog lovers on here so I figured I would drop in and say I got a new puppy. She is sheltie mixed with a beagle so she has the sheltie coat but a beagle body. Some friends of ours found her and another dog (another beagle) out on the roads and picked them up, and with today’s economy when they took them to the pound or whatever you want to call it, they said they had a full house and would only give them 48 hours before they would be put down. So our friends brought by the house and they were in horrible shape. The beagle's collar had been on so tight that her skin started to grow to it. The dog we got has fleas BAD and is extremely timid. From what I've heard she is around a year old, she has her first vet visit today at 3:30 so I am a little nervous over what he might say. We decided this morning to call Sally, so it's Weezer, Ellie, and Sally and the funny part is the dog Ellie (another rescue dog) was named after eleanor the car and Sally I got from mustang sally so I guess hot rodding runs a little deep around these parts.

So please keep her in your thoughts and keep your fingers crossed that she checks out good at the vet so she can live a long happy life.

      Thanks

      Good for you!

In my own experience, rescue dogs are the best. They may need some "repairs" to get them into shape, but they seem so grateful after they get used to the new home.
I am not useless, I can still be used as a bad example!

Very cool. We have ten dogs with nine of them being rescue dogs - nine Pomeranians and one Pom/Chihuahua mix. Never meant to have that many, but I'd get a call to pick one up (so it wouldn't be put down), then hang on to it until I could get it to the rescue group. We end up getting attached to the dog, then just keep it. They all have their stories. Ours live very pampered lives - we call it the Pomeranian Resort and Life Spa. I tell my wife it makes the man upstairs smile. Good luck with the new pup!

We have two rescued beagles, and they're great. Yes, it took some time and effort, but they are very smart little dogs who love to learn- especially if there's a treat in it for them.

Also, beef up the security in the backyard. They will go under or over a fence if they can, just to see what's on the other side.

Great dogs though- loyal, loving, very sweet.

It's a shame how many dogs are put to sleep...

Thanks for all the kind words!!! We just got back and it was better then what I thought but not the best I could hope for, she was negative for polva (SP?) and heart worms so that great news she does have hook worms so she is on medication for that and she has some bacteria in her ears so she has to her ear cleaned and medicated for a few days. I was very concerned just because the way she has been acting (very sluggish, and sickly) but the vet said the hook would cause her to act like that and that any kind of intestinal parasites are treatable. SO I AM VERY RELEAVED!!! We also found out she is not part sheltie but more likely Australian Sheppard. And we also had a name change because of her coppery colored coat we decided to call her Penny… No I did not steal the name from bad penny, it just popped up.

So we are still not 100% out of the thick of it but we are a heck of lot closer!

      Thanks

We dealt with the parasites too- tapeworm in our case. But, it didn't take long to clear up and all was well. The parvo and heartworm are the big ones, and beagles sometimes have eye issues too. If you're all clear on that stuff, you should be just fine.

Well today has gone great she slept like a stone all last night. She got her first dose of her worm medicine last night and got sick but we called the vet and she said thats ok. She seems to be feeling alot better today she is moving around alot more she still seems a little sickly but I guess I would too, she is a very quiet dog I have yet to actually hear her bark, which can be good thing. Our other dog (Ellie) isn't to thrilled about her, but she'll just have to get over it.

Great to hear the reasonably good news from the vet. Great looking dog! Once she starts feeling better I'll bet you'll have an awesome dog.

Well she is feeling a lot better! She is starting to get into typical puppy trouble (jumping up on the counters, selective hearing, ect) but I am just glad she feels better. She and Ellie were playing this morning... that was funny, Ellie is a full blooded cattle dog so she is beyond quick and can change direction at the speed of sound, and Ellie tries to get her heals so Penny is covered in spit and is bouncing from couch to couch with Ellie attached to heals.

She has got beagle in her for sure, because she is very strong willed and hard headed but I think she'll listen better once she settles.

She looks content. It doesn't get much better than that for a dog!

The strong will can be an asset once she uses her powers for good instead of evil. Use all the Dog Whisperer advice- it sure helped us! Be consistent, calm, and assertive and it'll all be fine.

She has been one of the quickest dogs to get the "potty training" thing down, she only gone in the house once and that was when she just started her "meds".

We put her to the test last night, we had a monthly neighbor hood "drinks on the driveway" (just a get neighbor hood together) and we left her out of her crate and she did great. She did a container of neosporin (sp) but other then that it has been great.

As promised here are some better pictures.

And this is Ellie (she just got a hair cut as you could tell)

Congrats & Thank you. Congrats for expanding the family, and thank you for taking in a dog off the streets.

We picked up a female yellow lab about a month ago of the streets. As sweet as could be...

So far our rescue dogs have been the best. They have there up's and there down's just like any other dog but in the end you can't beat a rescue dog.
