New Carcraft and Hot Rod

Is it just me that hates the new Carcraft and Hot Rod? They tried to design the new look with the same philosophy as FHM. Bathroom reading material is one thing but short bursts of crap is another. I got Attention Deficit Disorder from just reading Carcraft. After reading Hot Rod I thought about hiring someone to build my car for but then I realized I wasn't a rich old fart and it was just the sepia tone getting to my brain. Johnny Hunkins, if you are reading this, don't ever change. The last edition of Popular Hotrodding was everything I could hope for and more.

I love the new Hot Rod. It was nice to see such a popular car mag with some modern updates in publishing and layout.

New CC is 'okay'. I'm not really digging that huge name on the cover though.

PHR has the best all-around "car mag" feel though. Johnny has put up some very nice covers, and we of course love the pro-touring cars!

I had given up on PHR years ago- they lost touch for a few (many) years. I'm not sure if it was Hunkins or what, but It's my most anticipated now. Too bad I get mine 3 weeks after the newstand edition comes out!

At least Freiburger & Hunkins aren't as full of themselves as David E. Davis of Automobile magazine (if he's still there- I gave up on all the R&T, C/D, Automobile, etc long ago).

I was one of Hot Rods biggest critics about 2 years ago. But I must say since then they have really turned the corner. They canned the Import Tuners and have incorporated a few more Pro-Touring cars onto their pages. Last month they did a great story on modifying an LS2.

I don't read Car Craft much, I'll have to check it out to form a better opinion.

Popular Hot Rodding, as far as I'm concerned, sits at the top right now. They are totally plugged in to the lastest in build technology and build style. If you're not reading it.....brother, you're being left behind.

CC didn't really change much IMO.

Someone needs to light a fire under the CHP guys for sure.

I agree with everyone else, Freiberger is the man! THe new Hot Rod layout is great, CC will take a few issues to work itself out, and it will be back. Freiberger was at the helm of that magazine in its heyday and will come around again I am sure. Keep up the good work Fry!

Id say its just you. Car Craft is the best magazine they have in my opinion....kind of the "red headed step child" of the whole primedia lineup. Its more along the lines of low dollar grass roots hot rodding, i love it. I dont bother with PHR. Just the cover turns me off, it says to me "you better have a fat ass wallet to try anything in here."

I really like the new layouts. I also like how car craft is going to start including EVERYTHING in their price list for build ups. I can't tell you how many times I've seen magazine engine build ups that used $300 headers, but only list them at $50 because they got them at a swap meet. Then they list the engine as a "budget" build-up.

I've really enjoyed the last few issues of Hot Rod. Yeah, they have some short blurbs, but they also have more in-depth stories. It all helps to keep us in touch with (some of) what's going on in our hobby/sport.
I've seen some small improvement in Car Craft, and I'm sure there is more to come. With all the ups and downs of Hot Rod, Car Craft has always been one of my favorites. I think it may have something to do with their underlying odd ball humour.
Quite some time ago (10 yrs?), I read the occasional issue of Popular Hot Rodding. The content was good, but things like poor spelling, bad grammer, and missing lines/sentences drove me nuts. I mean, come on guys, you're supposed to be proffesionals!!! Well with the strong allegiance to PHR of so many people at PT.com, I have picked up a few recent copies of PHR and, well, my subscription is in the mail. The g28 story really hit a soft spot in me. But what I really want is a subscription to Engine Masters!!
As for Chevy High Performance, I've made my view perfectly clear in previous posts. I want Jeff Smith back!!!

Jeff Smith ruins every magazine he gets a hold of IMHO. I dont mind my occasional issue of $75,000 EFI and 20" rim cars. Because, if done right, it makes for a nice looking car, but thats not realistic hotrodding. Where theres Jeff Smith, theres 20" rims, & EFI

I was just thinking how the latest car craft was the first time in a long time I remember actually ENJOYING reading a mag as opposed to just skimming it for desperately looking for something that wasn't a rehash of the same story they ran 4 months ago (though admittedly this month fits under the bi-annual "paint and body exposed!" category). I like their grass-roots approach, and I'm excited about the "we call BS" section IF they actually follow through with it. Hot Rod and PHR are definitely the home of some the nicest cars, but it's also usually out of my league. CC and CHP usually come closer to my desire to have a nice car with a decent level of modern amenity, but not wrapped in a $100k price tag
