      Air cleaner decision

What kinda open air cleaners are you guys running? I have one of the K&N filter lids that I have never opened but cannot decide what to run. I "HATE" chrome so those are totally out of hte question. I have looked at a few of the aluminum ones used on race cars and like them but not sure how they would look, then I would need to get rid of the filter lid I have now.

They have the matching breathers for the K&N

Love this look. Would have done this on my car, but I already had a chrome/black thing going too far to turn back and went with more Billet Specialties shiny stuff.

A plain and simple spun aluminum (not polished) stock car style topper on that engine IMO.

That is what I am leaning towards. The filter lid type the others have in the above pictures is what I already have and really don't want to use as it doesn't match the rest of the engine or car. I bought it when they first came out and it is still in the box.....so anybody in the market for one.

I used that style K & N on a recent build for a customer. Not sure how much it contributed to the fire, but it did not help. All this from a backfire in the carb.

Absolutely....I wouldn't use it and yet another reminder to get a fire extinguisher in your car today!

      Wow,

      Brutal Pics,

Happy I didn't do it. Have to admit it looks good.

Well it did anyway. Not worth it. Unsold. Not worth it.

      Very bad actually.

Didn't even cross my mind until you said it.

      Covered in oil, hummmmm...

While the filter did not start the fire, I do believe it helped it to intensify. I am reminded daily of the result. Have been rebuilding this car for several months now.

Absolutely Mike....I had a similar issue on mine. I was headed down to ATS to get my exhaust put on and didn't realize the rear float was adjusted to high and it spilled over killing the engine and started a fire. Luckily I had brought an extinguisher and just made a mess with no damage. With that air cleaner it would have cinged the hood minimum.

This is the kind I threw on mine. It helped make a bit more power on the dyno, with the base to match the lid contours. I have the room to run a 2 inch spacer under the aircleaner, which seems to help straighten out the air. The only reason I have a filter that big is because it was off the 4x4 I had... The lid was fairly dull when I started, but everytime I clean the waterspots off it with the mother's, it gets a little bit shinier. Nothing overkill tho... Works for me...

I have been told several times and have used the advice to turn the engine over if you have a fire in the carb from a backfire after the engine has stopped turning.
You will suck the flame right out immediately.
So to always be on the safe side I always keep cranking a moment or 2 after a backfire.

That was a heartbreaking picture of that engine bay.

I agree Jim but circumstances are never the same. Carry an extinguisher and you will probably never use it.

That is exactly what the owner was doing when he called me.
It was still burning at the time. As bad as it looks it will be better than the first build. And I saved parts that at first I thought were trash. The engine is unhurt. The intake up is trash. I saved the Ron Davis rad. but the Spal fans melted. I will post some rebuild pics later. And by the way, it's gonna be EFI.

Well, that settles that for sure! I guess I will list it on ebay then and let someone else take a chance with it.

I found this air filter lid from K&N shortly after purchasing my carbon fiber hood.

It's kina pricy 254.95 but totally sick looking.
