Autorama - I'm not impressed!

Autorama, I spent the entire day there Friday with my son. Yes the Ridler cars were great. However, chroming the brake disc's is too much. You can't drive the car. Period! People of this site, we are way and I mean way ahead of the curve in regards to pro-touring style cars. There were only a few that made the grade at the show. The highlight vehicle for pro-touring was the Fear Factor "Sick Fish." Yes, there was a lot of nice cars, big chromed engines, tons of power, but most of the cars still had the pro-street look with the old true and blue Gragar rims and big - ass rear tires. Other cars that were more traditional looking, being slightly modifed had the 14" or 15" rims and big radial tires. A few or small area of cars had air ride and what I would call exteme "low riders". For those going to the show, check it out and tell me what you think. R.P.

The reasons that you stated are the same as mine.This is probably why I havent gone in quite a few years.

i have never shown my cars theres,but the autorama is for guys who want trophys.your right they dont worry about driving them,which is a waste of money and a great car.never the less dont knock the show only guys.because we enjoy driving around our 75.000 dollar cars.i get alot of ideas of the guys to transfer to my real world car.boyd,foose,and many other builds and owners spend a ton on a trophy queen.

we did the trophy chasing thing while i was still in h.s. it was cool to skip school and travel the country, but i agree. it was a p-s maveric and it sat @ 1" off the ground, yes 1 inch. we won a lot of trophies in the 2-1/2 years that we ran the ISCA circuit.
we only lost once and that was a 2nd place to a p.o.s. (the sponsor sons car).

nowa days i would rather be driving the cars i build!

Sorry to hear you didn't enjoy the show, Roger. I for one felt it was the best one yet. I could care less if those Ridler cars are driven or not. You build your car for what you want and they'll build theirs for what they want. It's a free country. As far as G-machines are concerned, you have to remember that the Pro-Touring movement is still making it's way across the Mountain Time Zone. It's still a 'west coast' thing. Although I thought I saw more cars that fit the G-machine mode this year than I have in years past. I think the people are catching on. As much as I think Pro-Street cars are useless...I do still like to look at them. There's a lot of work, fabrication, and money that goes into them and that always intrigues me. Plus my tastes are expanding a bit. I really enjoy the Choppers at the show when in years past I would wonder why they were there to begin with. Detroit Choppers had some beautiful specimens on display that they were letting people try out. My first time sitting on a $50,000 motorcycle...it was pretty awesome. Found some awesome deals on 'Dub City' cars for my desk at work. $10 a piece...how can you go wrong?

I don't know....I had a great time. I wish I could go back and see those Rat Rods that were downstairs, they intrigue me as well.

Yeah really. I liked the pics of the show. So what if not everyone is into 'pro-touring'. Big deal. Makes the nice pro-tourers all that much more special.

I believe you are correct. New car mod's almost always start out as a west coast thing. Being born and raised in Metro Detroit, I'm surprised that more cars from this area haven't modernized their vehicles yet.

I used to go every year... the price tag per person turned me off this year.

I usually go just to check it all out and get some different ideas from the cars and see what radios everyone has (market research ;-) )

IMPO the best year was the lat one before Ed Roth Died. I have been into Roths cars and art since i was a kid (Dad gave me all his old Hot Rod/ Rod & Custom Mags) and it was really cool to meet him and he signed everything you bought.

Well said! It is true most trends start on the west coast but if you'll notice most of the bigtime builders are in the midwest know along with several of the magizines home bases! personally I enjoy looking at the cars, That are " " show queens they give me good ideas of things to do on my stuff

musclecars that handle well are just getting popular on the east coast , but more so every day.

fifteen years ago i had a lowered 69 during the height of the prostreet crave and everyone asked me if i was gonna " tub my car and get a motor"

i like the shows cause you see what other people like and i try and be open. once in a while i see an import car that i like , usually on the road ,not at a show.
