Power steering advice needed.
I plan to go back to power steering on my 68 Firebird but want a plan before I start buying parts (for once). I have all the original parts but they were pretty worn out when I took them off and not a quick ratio set up. What would be the best approach? In the long run I want power steering with quick ratio and down the road if I feel the need I would like the option of going with hydroboost and larger discs. I got a price for a whole new system last summer with a Lee box and new pump, reservoir, lines and rag joint and it was around 1000.00 if I remember right. How much can I save but piecing together a system like an IROC box and reusing/rebuild in my original pump? Would it better to bite the bullet and buy the new stuff or just buy the IROC box and start upgrading the system as needed? One thing I will interject is I do not have a lot of time to tear the system apart and fight with it to make it all work together and I do nor want to redo everything if I do want to upgrade to hydroboost down the road. I want to run at least a few autocross events this upcoming summer. Thanks Steve

01-14-2009 #2Im running a thirdgen box in my firebird and have had no issues with it so far. Check out this link for a full rundown of the process:

As far as cost, my setup was really inexpensive. I had the WS6 box already from a previous car, so I bought the coupler/rag joint from the parts store (see link above for part number), picked up a pump that would work with the hoses from the new steering box and ran it like that. I think my total cost was under 200. I don't have experience with the needs of the hydroboost systems, hopefully someone else can help out on that end.Last edited by f1shman; 01-14-2009 at 05:50 AM.
