wheel,tire sizes

I'm trying to decide on wheel size for my 72 cutlass but i want to make sure i can get the overall dimension i need before i select a wheel size.I'm looking for an overall dimension of at least 28".Does a 17" or 18" wheel offer a better tire selection? I'm going with a 9.5" wide rear and either a 7 or 8 inch wide front. I'm looking for more of the classic muscle car look with bigger tires in back and smaller in front. The wheels will be tucked in the wheel wells of course but i dont want the rubber band look if anyone has pics or tire size recomendations i would certainly appreciate them thanks.
