      Problem with a Jeep Grand Cherokee limited...

      got a problem with my 03 grand cherokee limited and need some input... It is a V-6 with QUADRATRAC. Anyways, there are 47k on the vehicle. I noticed the other day that there was a weird sound coming from the front end. It almost sounds like when you are spinning a tire and you put something against it or like a loud dentist drill. If I go in a straight line and slowly give it the gas it does not start until I hit around 15-20 miles an hour. If I let off the gas it is still there, If I put it into 2nd gear still there, neutral still there, first still there. But minute I kick under 15 miles an hour it goes away but as soon as I hit above 15 mph it comes back. If I turn the wheel in a tight circle at that speed I hear it intermittenly if at all. Really weird but looking to see where to start. I have read just about everything from change the wheel bearings to U joint cups to water pitting the shafts to replacing the front transfer case. One guy removed his front axle to make it go away.(not a fix just a band aid in my opinion and not viable in new england..) ANY Help would be greatly appreciated. I also would like an explanation on why you think the fix you propose is the right one. Not trying to be a wise guy just want to avoid any wild guessing. THANKS IN ADVANCE!

      Know anyone with a lift? If so get it up in the air and have someone run it up till it does it. Get a stethescope (SIC?) or an long screw driver and listen to every point there is a bearing. You will hear the one that is louder. Hope this helps some......

      Sounds like a bearing hub to me. I've experienced this on several occasions. Absolutely no noise at lower speeds. It's sometimes hard to detect with the vehicle on a jack and free spinning the wheel too. If it was ring and pinion noise I would expect the noise to change when under and off load. I've replaced three of these on vehicles I've owned and each time it fixed the problem. I will admit thought that I let the noise get real bad before I replaced them and at that point it's undeniable where the problem is.

      We used to be a Jeep dealership until a few years ago and if you cannot make the noise get loader by driving at the speed you hear the noise and turning right to left to load and unload the bearing then chances are it isn't a hub. Normally you can change the noise at least some by driving like this. Like was mentioned if you can put it on a lift to try and find the niose that will help. However we used to rebuild an average of 6 differentials a week when were a dealership for Jeep so. From experience I would lean more towards that than a hub, not that many hubs went bad on a jeep

      How many miles on the truck? .... is is lifted or stock etc?
      Do you run it hard? (like go off road with it etc)..

      Thanks guys.. I will try putting it on a lift and taking a listen. I thought about doing this on jack stands but dont think I want to be under jack stands with the motor going...

      It is a stock suspension and it is a 2003 Limited. I dont go off roading with it at all. It is my winter vehicle for the snow and ice.

      Well here is the funny thing. It has been really cold here the last two days. We had a snow and Ice storm and for the past two days I have not heard a thing from the front end. Today the ground is dry and I started to go and right at 15 miles an hour on the dot the noise came back. Dead silence until I hit 15 miles and hour!!! WEIRD! So I gotta ask does a part of the quadratrac kick on at 15 miles an hour or maybe something else? I just find it weird that at EXACTLY 15 miles an hour the sound comes on like that...

      My dodge has started to do this and was told to put the diff addative in ,then give it a go spin around a car park left and right to get it to work into the plates.

      I was a Jeep mechanic for a few years; it sounds the 247 t/case or the trans. Of course it could be something silly like a tire rubbing on something or the fan hitting the shroud. P/S...a V-6 with a Quad-Trac...are you sure??

      YES It is a 2003 LIMITED with Quadratrac and a V6!! I was shocked when I saw it as I thought all of the limiteds were v8's but this one was ordered that way... BTW It has been snowing up here the last two days straight. I have driven the jeep alot in this snow. We got about two feet of it. I have not heard the noise once in the past 48 hours...
