      Battery cable bulkhead connector

I'm running a trunk mounted battery. I want to bring the positive cable forward to the engine firewall and then put a bulkhead connector on the firewall instead of just running the cable thru a hole. Does anyone have a good source for something like this that's nice and clean and neat? This is the engine compartment that it's going in so it needs to be very sanitary..........

Yes it seems these bulkhead fittings are all the same or very simialr anyways. I was really looking for something a bit more protective with respect to accidentally grounding it. Seems like it's just hanging out there wating to be shorted to ground with a wrench or something. Maybe it would actually be better to just do the grommet thing. Hmmmm

These bulkheads work great and when positioned right they're not even noticeable. If installed in the right place you can have several inches of clearence so there shouldn't be any grounding out. Especially in your case where everything appears to be run neat, tidy, and fastened securely. Also, heat shrink is your friend.

If you do go the grommet route be careful not to get a thin flimsy one.

      Good luck.

Any ideas on what to cover the bulkhead connector with just to keep anything from shorting it?

If you run the remote solenoid from Mark at Mad Enterprises.com the terminal is only hot during cranking.

If you look at some of DSE's builds you can see the thru terminal just above the pass foot well near the trans tunnel in a flat spot. Look thru some of DSE's build threads and you can see what I'm talking about.
You could mount the terminal in the trans tunnel and then it would not be seen by the casual observer...

A battery terminal cover would also be a clean way to cover the terminal.

a remote solenoid is a very good idea when running cable from back of car, that way only when its cranking is it hot, so if it ever gets on to the header
by remote i mean in the trunk next to the battery, to elimate as much heavy gauge hot wire you can

I will agree on the solenoid. Chad uses one on his. I was going to suggest you check his out next Sunday, but IIRC you won't be there.

Aircraft supply stores have a sheath for various cable sizes that are set up to cover a lug and stud electrical connection like the battery bulkhead deals. I got mine from Aircraft Spruce. Really impressed the guy doing tech on the little green race car that I had a purpose built piece, rather than a chunk of electrical tape trying to cover the starter cable

To cover the terminal on any bulkhead connector for battery cables you can get a boot from Exide to do the job and they are a lot like OEM boots that cover the battery terminals on millions of cars out there. Walmart has had them in the automotive departments at some stores for years in both red and black.

Allstar Performace markets a really good bulkhead connector if you can't find one anywhere else. Lots of performance shops deal in Allstar Products.

Using the bulkhead will give you a place to hook up multiple devices and also it can give you a place under the hood to jump the car without having to get in the trunk

It sounds like to me with a battery in the trunk and assuming that you only want the large battery cable hot during cranking that one is forced to run a second smaller line (where you can actually put a fuse inline) to a second bulkhead connector that would then be used as B+ for the rest of the system.

      Ed, you are right.

When using the trunk solenoid, MAD has you run an 8ga pos, on the battery side of the solenoid, wire to a terminal block to provide 12v up front. I'd rather do this than have a constant hot 0ga wire under my carpet.

I bought some cable for this from Quick Car and a few bulk head fittings, and you will not short with those bulk head fittings. Also, at corners and any likely pinch points, I'm zip tying convoluted tube over the cable to give it extra protection.

I'm very happy so far with the MAD/Quick Car/Painless setup I'm using. Not fully installed yet, but going well.

I used these from http://www.quickcar.net/electric/57810.html as mentioned earlier. These are great. they screw solidly to the firewall and they hold the cable very solid. I would recomend these over a rubber grommet any day.
