SBC Cam Button & Balancer Question

I've pulled the 350 engine from my '52 Chevy pickup. It's been a strong running engine, so I'm just replacing gaskets and installing a new oil pump.

Two questions for you guys ......

I pulled the timing chain cover and notice that there isn't a cam button installed? Should there be? Do all cams have cam buttons? If so, are there different thicknesses? Does the button ride against the timing chain cover? Is there a specific lube that goes along with it? I assume that the button would keep the cam from "walking" back and forth?

Second question involves the harmonic balancer. I notice that the keyway of the balancer and the timing notch are not lined up. Should they be in line? I believe that the answer is yes.

And a third question, I guess. The timing chain sprockets are installed "straight up". I have the option to advance the timing by 4 degrees. Good choice? This will just be a street driven, semi daily driver truck.

      Thanks

Flat tappet cams do not usually use a cam button. It is not needed. The balancer might have spun the outer, the rubber breaks down over time. Or it could just have mis-matched years of balancer and front cover. Last I don't know if I'd advance the cam that much without a degree wheel. Advancing or retarding the cam just moves the power band around. It will take away power from down low and move it higher, or vice versa.

Pre '69 balancers have the timing mark 2 degrees before the keyway centerline. '69 and up, timing mark is 10 degrees before the keyway centerline. You can use either balancer as long as you have the matching pointer.
