'72 Firebird Formula / LS1 / T-56
I'm starting up this thread for my '72 firebird project. I'll try to include as many details and photos to help make this a useful thread to people and not just a scrapbook of my build. I'm building this mostly at my house with the help of friends and access to a few tool that not everyone has, but for the most part it is a home built project.
My aim is to make a 1/2 modern 1/2 vintage style. Bringing both the pro-touring power and handling and mixing it with original 70's trans-am (not the car, the race series) style.
Some choices I've already decided on are
'98 LS1 and T-56 (already ahd this before the car)
Vintage Wheel Works V48s
Hotchkis TVS
GEN II stopflex kit. (provided the G-braces fit around the LS1)
1985 Corvette Z51 LS1/T56 project
1986 Dodge Conquest
1963 Ford Falcon w/ 2.3 Turbo & T5
1973 Detomaso Pantera

10-13-2008 #2Bought a set of Edelbrock 6701 mount plates.

I am trying to keep the A/C intact and use my '98 F-body pan. I've seen a hundered posts and everyone's is slightly different. I've seen some notching on the subframe, and some look ok and some make me worry. One looked very deep and made me think the strength of the crossmember was compromised. Anyways.. I'm on a quest to see if it can be done and how.
I'll start off with these plates and see where that gets me. At the very minimum I will know if this amount of set-back will work.
I also bought a quart of eastwood 2k chassis black in gloss.

Once I take apart the subframe, I'll haul it over to my friends to sandblast and prime it, then I'll shoot this stuff on it and see what it looks like. I got a quote of $500 for powder coating it and decided use that chuck of money towards something more fun, like suspension.1985 Corvette Z51 LS1/T56 project

11-03-2008 #4Well I've been making progress, but slowly. I'm also in the middle of a complete kitchen redo and getting my '54 panel truck roadworthy. It's killing me not to have more time to work on the firebird though.
Got the subframe separated. It has been cleaned and installed before, so it wasn't too bad, but it was obviously temporary since castle nuts were on upside down in some places and several bolts weren't even tight.
I also picked up these ROH wheels for temp rollers. The price was right at $200, and now I can work on my big brake stuff and still be able to roll the car around. They are all 17x8.5 with 275/40/17
as you can see I have some repair work to be done on my subframe.. this car has had a number of engine transplants in its past.1985 Corvette Z51 LS1/T56 project
