      Fuel injected 572 problems

My dad is building a 66 Chevelle with a 572 c.i. crate motor. He had Arizona Speed and Marine build a RamJet style fuel injection system for it.

When he fired the motor it fouled the plugs pretty quickly. He replaced the plugs and drove the car and it ran poorly. He sent the brain back to AS&M and had them work it over again. After getting it back and driving the car it runs like heck on the big end but still pretty poorly at and off idle.

Now here are my concerns. AS&M did not have him use an O2 sensor and they told him that was just for cruising. I told him to remind them that this is not a race car and it is going to be driven on a regular basis. The second thing is that we are over 5300' elevation, and AS&M stated this is not an issue with the fuel injection.

Anyone have any suggestions, similiar problems, solutions?

      Thanks!

not a big fan of any efi system that cannot be tuned by the end-user, and/or doesn't even use an O2 sensor. Without an O2 it's open loop and cannot add/subtract fuel to keep the a/f correct, which is the biggest advantage of efi. Elevation makes a huge change on the aftermarket efi's, making them quite lean (20-30% across the board would be a good start to add to the fuel map). I don't know what computer this uses and if it has altitude compensation that actually works. Yours sounds rich (fouling plugs) which is opposite of elevation tunes I've done, but maybe they tried to compensate for the elevation and went way too far.

My suggestion would be to get the car to someone who can tune it, or get the software to tune it yourself.

If you cant tune the engine AFTER the brain is in the car, you will never be abe to get it drivability to 100% or ever see all of the potential horse power.
Ihave a few things left to sell and Im done with the performance thing for a few years.....

UPDATE: 24- MAY-2010... Im atleast 4.5 years away from being able to start my fantasy build... 1970 chevelle, carbon fiber, titanium, billet steel, and billet aluminum EVERYTHING. LOL

no reason not to have O2 sensors, even on a radical street car...from the sounds of it AS&M is feeding you a load of horse **** for apparently no reason, altitude wouldn't be a problem with a looped fuel control system....i would look for another company for support...

x3 on the o2 sensors. If your gonna go EFI, they may as well do it right the right way.
