      trans cooler

425 hp 62 impala w/ 7004r is it better to cool the trans w/ a combo water radiator/trans cooler or is it better to cool the trans with its own cooler

Yours is a question of efficency and packaging.

Air / water... yes, by all means. Line size, a minimum of -6. Although... the majority of in tank coolers are no where near enough. Units like that from Ron Davis, C&R... and a few others are more up to the task as they most commonly use larger heat exchanger cores in the tanks and use AN fittings.

Air / air... takes up more room and is much less efficient. Line size, a minimum of -6. It has to be 'hung' into an airstream... more fittings required... may possibly need an external fan to finish up the job... so the expense is/can be somewhat higher.

have you heard good things about mattson radiator? They claim they have a radiator with built in trans cooler that could handle the hp.
