      wheel weights

i started this thread to get wheel weights of some of the wheels that vendors from this website sell. i've always been a fan of www.wheelweights.net and feel that while it is an excellent resource, the author mostly lists import wheels. that is the reasoning behind this thread, to shed some light on some, if not all, of the aluminum, billet, and forged wheels that are popular w/ our crowd.

so, manufacturers AND distributors who are reading, i (and i'm sure other customers) really want to get to the bottom of wheel weights for our applications. i want to know if i have to spend $4K on wheels in order to get an 18X8 w/ a weight under 20 lbs, or is there a wheel out there that has comparable styling and weighs less?? owners, if you have weighed your nice new 1, 2, or 3 peice wheels prior to mounting tires, PLEASE share your weight(s)!

for simplicities sake, i'm going to keep the requested weights to 17", 18", 19", and 20".

if anyone wants me to add a specific wheel company to the list, i will do so by editing this initial post. also, if mods/admins want/need to edit this thread before i can get to requests, please do.

don't everyone go and post at once :D.

wheel manufacturers and vendors, y'all usually cite the fact that different offsets and other build characteristics make posting wheel weights problematic, and i can understand to a degree. but i also feel that wheel weights are oftentimes kept as secret as possible because wheels that are sold might not be as lightweight as the manufacturers would have us believe. if i paid $4K+ for wheels i would very unhappy to find that they weigh 25 lbs a peice.

boze, forgeline, fessler, etc. if you guys are reading, please post some weights! i see pretty wheel pictures posted in this subforum all the time, showcasing a new finish or tweak. when you take those pics, weigh the wheel!

      -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

i just contacted/emailed the following companies:
[email protected]; [email protected]; [email protected]; [email protected]; [email protected]; rushforth; fiske; forgeline; boze

i invited all of them to check out this thread and post any and all wheel weights from their respective line-ups. hope to get some good info. started in this thread .

Just saw the post. I want to first say, I applaud your effort. Most of my best friends are Mechanical Engineers working for Raytheon, Lockhead, and other goverment agencies. They all strive for this information as well.

Remember, most of these companies are working hard to get through SEMA right now, and what you are asking for is not EASILY achieved as I can tell you that most wheel companies do not stock these items, but build them to order. What I'm ultimately telling you is that these are not off the shelf waiting for someone to run and grab, and weigh. So, to give you what you are looking for, in the vast amount of wheels you have listed, could take several months for companies to put together for you. I hate to burst your bubble or anything, and I certainly don't want to disappoint, but I wanted to shed some light on what it is that you are looking for, and how difficult it is to put together. Not to mention that usually customers want their wheels to ship ASAP, and our production crew works effortlessly to produce in a quick amount of time. Throwing a wrench in the production program and grabbing wheels off the cleaning table to weigh could effectively slow down the shipping progress. You many think not, but believe me, it will.

We do however have plans to start weighing wheels as we can get a chance to, and will be adding that information to an excel spread sheet, but like I said above, it will take time.

If you have any further questions, PM me. We've been slammed by the SEMA crunch, as have most, and I will get an email if you PM. Thanks.

thank you. as time consuming as it will be and as big a pain in the ass it will be, striving to get these weights is a worthwhile quest in spite of how difficult it will be to do. this type of information, just as much as looks, finishes, and customer service, sells wheels.

i understand everything you're saying, and i am perfectly OK w/ this process taking many months.

my bubble is still intact . i propose a semi-solution below.

might i suggest buying a nice digital scale or two (or three or four for that matter) that'll give you weight in lbs and kg. put them throughout your plant/assembly line etc to make it easier to weigh wheels at the best possible time, thus maintaining your speedy delivery schedule. also, take pics of the wheels on the scale. whenever a new wheel is finished up, put it on the scale, snap a pic, mount a tire (or not), and ship it out.

forget about this thread, enjoy SEMA (take pics!), and i'll send out a reminder later this year to see where you and your colleagues are at w/ this process. and thank you for being a good sport. so far, you're the only person i've contacted brave enough to step up to the plate, and IMO that says a lot.

I think for those manufacturers whose wheels are pretty light it would be a major selling point to have those numbers published for others to see. I know I was interested in wheel weights as I was shopping for wheels.

I can understand why it might be big time sync in getting these numbers together but I'm sure many would shop on looks and weight if the weight numbers were more readily available.

Yeah, I agree that it's a good selling point to know the wheel weights. I've got an E30, and there's a company on a BMW forum I'm part of that has a line of wheels that weigh 15 pounds or less. I forget the exact size, but there was a 5 spoke (I think 15") that weighed 13 pounds!!

When I get the money I'll be buying a set.

We will post up as we get them like John talked about, SEMA is here now so no time for this. The biggest problem with this is that the few of us that build custom wheels in any size will always weight in more because most of our wheels are large and very wide. I have not sold a set of 18-inch wheels yet so everyone with a 18X8 will be much less than what lets say my 19X13 will be.

As we build them we will weight them so you can see the weights.

You can see in the picture front wheels have thicker hub area.

thank you T-CHRGD, first post updated.

first post also edited to reflect the below email communication:

hello i am interested in your esajian "rail" wheel in the following specs: 5X120.65 18X8 w/ 4.5" BS 18X10 w/ 5.5" BS. i see that the wheels have forged billet centers. what are the hoops constructed from? these are two peice wheels, correct? and finally, and most importantly for me, could you tell me how much an 18X8 and 18X10 rail would weigh? thank you for your time.

      to: me
      from: Ken Esajian ([email protected])
The hoops are spun aluminum the centers are forged billet. the weights are 18x8 = 25lb. 18x10 = 27lb. the prices are 465 a wheel. the website prices are in the process of updating. regards, Ken
