read this if you work out!!!!!

      ok i need to vent!.......

so i like to workout. i'm in iraq and the gym here is always pretty busy because there are so many troops.

i went in yesterday to work my legs and i like to start off with squats. so i get there and we only have 1 squat rack. 4 guys were using it to work their shoulders. i can't stand it when people use the squat rack to work their upper body. there are a hundred places to work your shoulders in the gym and one squat rack. i had to wait 20 mins for them to get done. this isn't the first time...i'm constantly seeing guys doing curls one the squat rack......CURLS!!!!! is it really that hard to set the bar on the ground rather than put it on the squat rack?!

Some guys need that. Maybe afraid to hurt thier backs.

But you know, gym machines are first come first served so I guess your SOL. I usually get in there early before the others....thats when I use to work out...now im too busy making excusses why I can't.

Sorry dude, I am guilty as well. I always use the squat rack when I do shoulders as well, for upright rows and shrugs. Although.....I am fairly considerate, if somebody looks like they are hovering / waiting to actually do some squats, I will usually cut my sets short and find another exercise.

Been there, done that, on both sides of the coin. You can let people work in or hurry up. Same goes for any piece of equipment especially where there is only one and it is popular. Basic gym etiquette.

Do you still believe in all the things that you stood by before? Are you out there on the front lines, or at home keeping score?
Do you care to be the layer of the bricks that seal your fate? Would you rather be the architect of what we might create?

I feel your pain fellas....I really do. I really hate it when I'm in line at a Chinese Buffet and some guy has to use the egg roll tongs to put lo mein noodles onto his plate or there's always the guy (or girl) who has to take all the meat out of the General Tso's chicken leaving only the vegetables. I mean...WTF already? Ya know?

I also use the squat rack for shoulders and straight-bar curls. But my gym has 4 of them and there is never anyone waiting when I use it.

When all else fails, just setup for dead lifts instead (works similar muscles) and do them in front of the guys hogging up the squat rack!!! I used to be able to deadlift 600 pounds, enough to drive most of the guys away when I was going at it. Of course every once in a while someone would want to see what the weight felt like, at their own risk of course!!!

Seriously though, since the equipment is not reserved, you might want to try working it out with the guys that are in your way, or trying to plan your gym time when the rack is most accessible. Look for ways to work around it, like dead lifts, leg presses (move your feet to different locations on the foot pad for a different feel), extended sets of leg curls or other leg exercises, or try doing power cleans or some form of lift from the ground to the shoulders (or even overhead).

And remember, whenever you start to get annoyed in the gym, just up the intensity on whatever you can do and enjoy the rush. Now go get 'em.
