      Trailer Insurance

who here has insurance on their trailer? What company?

My brother's car insurance carrier, Allstate ,said they do not cover his 32ft car trailer or the contents inside. He's in the process of moving and has all his household stuff in the trailer and wants to make sure it's covered just in case something happens on his move...

Good luck as most Carriers will not extend coverage unless you have home and auto with them. On the good side trailer insurance is fairly cheap.

He should check his homeowners policy, household contents should be covered as they are not covered by your auto policy. Chances are he is covered for all except the trailer itself.

A typical homeowner's policy will cover the home's contents during the process of a move, provided the contents remain in the care & custody of the homeowner. A moving company has its own coverage, so losses that occur while a moving company has a guy's stuff are not covered by his policy.
Coverage for the trailer should be readily available from the carrier that insures the trailer owner's vehicles. The trailer coverage will be limited to collision and comprehensive coverage (theft, storm damage, etc). The liability coverage extends from the vehicle that is towing the trailer and is not available for the trailer itself.

We have a new 18' open trailer insured at full value ($2k-ish) and it costs $12 per year through State Farm.

I moved from CT to FL. I was moving using my 24' enclosed. In Atlanta the trailer was stolen along with the 66 Mustang in it and the 84 454 Surburban tow vehicle. The trailer, Surburban and Mustang were all stuffed with tools and household stuff.

Homeowners ins would'nt pay out unless I could provide reciepts for all the stuff. I've been a car guy all my life and every b-day, X-mas etc I always got tools and stuff- no reciepts. The few reciepts I had for recent purchases of bigger stuff like welders, race jacks etc were in my rollaway which was stolen along with everything else. I buy a lot of used items so I didn't have reciepts for any of that stuff either.

The contents wasn't covered by the tow vehicle ins because when I got the new policy for Florida where I was moving to, the ins company said comprehensive would only pay out 1500.00 for the burb if it was burned, stolen etc and since I had a 1000.00 deductable it would be wasted money to buy comprehensive. Comprehensive might have paid for the trailer but I didn't buy it on their recommendation.

The truck, trailer and Mustang were recovered and it cost me about 5,000.00 to retrieve them between cabs, planefare, hotel, towing charges, storage charges and repairs to the truck and trailer to make them operational. Haven't fixed the stang (parts taken off of it)yet or gotten a new stereo for the burb.

Meanwhile I had bought another truck (before being notified the stolen one was recovered) and trailer and finished moving. Went back to house # 1 to sell it and the new home (#2) was burglarized and everything else that wasn't stolen previously was stolen in a big truck like in a bad movie. Again no good coverage admitedly due in part to my negligence not reading policys etc. Home was robbed over a year ago and I still can't live there due to complications from the burglarly. I no longer have any furniture, appliances, beds, TV's etc. Between the two incidents almost everything I owned was stolen, only the cars are left. I've been living at a friends home (lucky for me they had an extra unused one! LOL) and it'll be months before the wreked house is usable.

      READ YOUR POLICYS!!!!!

Doesn't the vehicle that is towing the trailer carry the insurance coverage? As far a left during the move, that would be a question for your agent.
