      Oil filter adapter

      I have a 1967 396. im using this filter adapter. http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku

it says in the instructions that i needed to keep the oil filter bypass valve. I dont have one. they are 35 bucks out of the resoration catalog. Is having the bypass valve completely necesary? Will it leak without it? It leaked before but it also had a crack in it. thats why i bought a new one.

      thanks

If it has the holes for the bypass valve you should not need the filter adapter kit. Most of those kits will require you to run an oil filter with a built in bypass valve. Usually Ford type.

Look up in the filter boss, are there 2 1/4" threaded holes?

The bypass just by passes fliud when the filter plugs up. If your filter does happen to plug your pressure will climb.
Will not cause leaks other wise.

That kit shows instructions that say it needs the bypass. There are others that do not.

Fram or Mr Gasket I believe. It tells you which oil filter to use. It has an internal bypass in the filter.

edit* Fram HPK1 adapter kit requires a filter HP1 or HP3 or equivilent with internal 22 psi by pass.
