      Engine Tapping... UGH!!

Well took the new car out for a spin. Fired right up, sounds good, plenty of oil... But got something funny going on in the motor. If I bring the motor up in the rpm range it is fine. If I keep my foot on the gas at any RPM it is fine. BUT If I take my foot off of the pedal and then lightly reapply it to the gas, I get this TAPPING noise in the motor. It sounds like it is coming from the top end of the motor. Like I said if I bring the car up to speed off the line It is fine, If I keep my foot on the pedal it is fine, but if I coast then put my pedal back on the gas lightly I get it right away. It is NOT detonation as it DOES NOT sound like rocks in a tin can. Definately a TAP TAP TAP TAP TAP sound almost like ticking but a lot more tinny What would be the best way to diagnose this problem??

Hopefully it's only an exhaust leak. You could try and drain the oil and put the heaviest grade you can find in it. If that stops or make the noise less, it could be internal.

Dont think it is an exhaust leak cause it is more of a TAPPING instead of a ticking sound. Also when the car is under load at a constant RPM I do not have that sound. I also do not have the sound if I am at a constant RPM and increase the load.

And when it is at idle I do not hear it. Also when I rev or slowly bring the rpms up in park I do not hear it either. It is only when I first start off or when I am on the highway, I let off the gas and then hit the gas again. I will try to isolate where it is coming from tommorrow but it will be hard since the car is in motion when it happens...

Well I took the valve covers off and checked the springs, rockers etc and everything checked out ok. Then I glanced inside the valve covers and saw on the passenger side that little grooves had been rubbed into them only on the bottom side of the head. So I am assuming that the springs were contacting the side of the valve covers making the tapping noise. At least that is what I hope is happening.. I have another set of covers that are taller so I will pop them on and give it another try. I will update with results..
