      Mini Tubbin ques

I am going to take the plunge and minitub my 68 Camaro. I have looked at the wheel database to try to figure out how much backspacing I need as well as find out how much to narrow the 9" I am getting. With some help from Vince, I decided to go with a 18x11 and run a 315/35/18 on it. Keeping leaf spring suspension and getting a fuel cell. What I am hoping to find out is:

How much I need to narrow the rearend? I have been looking at the complete rearend from Moser $980 with brakes ( I already have the 3rd memeber I want), but they wanted to know what length to make it? The other idea is to get a used housing and build one. (I already have one I can get) What would you guys do on that front?

      Make own or buy?

I tubbed my '68 and basically just got the wheel/tire combo I wanted, did the minitub, then mocked up the wheels and measured. I think my housing was 52.5" flange to flange (315/35/17, 5.5" bs).

Keep rear width similar to stock?

You might consider either stock-width or at least the same width the your front hubs have so that the wheel dish matches up closely. Vince is a great resource, the guy has probably built 3 dozen cars on his own already and is constantly working on others (his, frineds, and clients), so his experience and real-world practicality really help.

Consider the tradeoff between making your own (time, cost, and potential frustration and money spent on changes) and having one built. I took a nice 10-bolt posi 3.73 from Vince, replaced axles with Moser units, moved the perches in, had to have it straightened and new bearings installed in the center section (basically rebuilt, and now it has a front seal leak!!!), powder coated, aluminum cover with bearing supports, and other goodies. I believe I have spent over $1,000 to make my own semi-custom rearend. If I had to do it over again I might have gone the custom aluminum 9" for weight, strength, cool looks, and much easier pinion-mounted ebrake stuff (my 10-bolt pinion-mounted ebrake was custom built and then I had to put in over 50 hours to get everything perfect, including the brake line tubing that runs under/through the caliper bracketry).

I really like my 10-bolt as I am able to carry it around the garage (without wheels mounted of course). The 12-bolt I traded to VInce was way heavier, so I figure I dropped at least 30+ pounds off of the car and it should handle my 500/500 dreams of power. If not, I am all over the custom aluminum unit.

      Brad,

Vince is mini tubbing my 67 camaro now. I purchased 17 x 11 wheels, 5.5" backspace, and 315 tires. Vince is mocking the wheels and tires up and then measuring for the length of the rear. Maybe give him a call and discuss what length he is making mine.

I might try to meet up with Vince sometime soon to get some help on my setup. I emailed him a couple of times back and forth. THe 9" I can get is from him, then I just need to build it....

I am hoping he might chime in here and give me some measurements. OR I will just call him later....

Hey guys, Jeff whats this? your pinion seal leaks? thats weird. Can you tell if its from the seal or the pinion nut area?? I've had one leak past the pinion spline but that was under driving pressure. I'd like to get updated pictures of your mini tub job too.
Mike your axles should be here any day now. To be honest this is the first complete DSE kit I've done and it threw me off abit with the measurements. Im use to fitting the tires in then putting everything eles where it needs to go. I wish the kit put the springs in another inch. Still looks good. DSE is definatly the way to go...make my job alot easier.
Brad on your car we are going to have to measure the set up that you have. From what i've run into theres a 3" difference between cars. Rockdogz came up with 52.5" and i've got 55 11/16". I checked my 69 for fun and I came up with 54 3/4". So getting your actual measurements are very important. I just returned your email so let me know. $980 isn't too bad for housing ,ends, bearings and axles tho.

Mike, I've seen your car at Vince's shop. You wouldn't believe the amount of tape he's using to hold that stuff in!!! Just messin. It's gonna look sweet.

Brad, you're really gonna let Vince influence you? Man, it's really tough to avoid it. Thank god I'm broke of he'd have my car too. Let's hope we can all meet up at the same time. I like learning new things now and then.

He will stare blankly at you, suddenly start drooling and will tell you he has no idea what you are talking about......wait! thats a good idea, maybe I should learn from him! Hey vince, I heard meanstreets performance is starting a drifting club? Can i join?

Im with JeffAndre , I would keep de rear axel stock lenght/width!! (witch is wat i did) then take the 17 ore 18x 11 inch rims with 7 inch backspacing . i have notised its common to shorten the axels in. To get the center of the rim in more backwards, but it realy messes the stijling up a bit i belive. because you have build this great car lowerd it. it hase this super stanse its very slick and hase smooth lines it looks "perfect", then all of a sudden you have this big GAB inwards in the rear of your car at the rims. sure its very impresife at first, but it kinda stands loose from the overal lines of the car, the first thing people are going to look at and keep on getting looking back at is your rear rims!!!!! you might consider haveing it look more"stock" width looking. Till you see the back of the car passing bye . creating a great looking balanced car from all angles ... If you look at most euro sports cars like ferrari merc bmw porche ecetera they al have this slick looking, and those big wide tires are viseble at the frond and the rear . not trying to insult anybody ore stiring things up just thingking out loud guys thats all (forgive my spelling)

Roadrage David, no I hear you thats what I did on my 2nd gen. But its really up to the owner and his/her taste. Sometimes its cost or looks. Some rim companies charge and arm and a leg to get a BS over 6". But if your getting HD axles and adding ends why not narrow to use a standard BS rim? wats rong wt yor spellingk???

Hi Jake, yeah that would be about right...a 68 with 275 on an 8" rim,10.5 section width 5.0" BS convert to a 315 on a 11" rim, 12.2" section width basically add 2", be around 7" BS.Its not exact for you car ,this is just an example. Since you can't come out anymore you gotta add the BS.
Im running an 8" BS on my 70' with 335's and 12" rims. I was running 285's 9.5" rims and a 5 5/8" bs which was 11.2" section width.
Sorry david I knew you were Dutch but had no idea you were dixlikeit! LOL i have no problem understanding you. ;)

Allen, as long as it doesn't show in the end, I'm cool with it. He can't do any worse than I have done.

      Vince, Cool about the axles.

      Brad,

I am in the process of minitubbing mine. I am keeping a wide rear and running 4rth gen F-body offset. From rim to rim it was 63.5" I figure the disks are 3/4" thick each, so I really would need a 62" flange to flange. I had Moser make it 61" This should leave 1/2"-3/4" max between the outside of the rear tire and the fender lip. I don't want to roll the fender lip. Keeping it wide as I plan on doing some road racing/auto-x with the car and felt the narrow rear would hurt me a little.

Here are some pics of the ZR1 wheels (17x11 in rear).

We have talked a little in the past over on SRO when I had my 01 SS.

The only thing I need to figure out right now id what wheel tub to order from Summit. Let me know if you want some info. It's a 73 but the process should be very similar. My suspension will more than likely be different than yours though.
