Narrowing Stock Framerails?
I was wondering if anyone has narrowed their factory framerails on a '65-'67 Chevelles. I have seen bunches of backhalf kits and even some that say that they will fit under the stock floorboards. I dont want to backhalf the car. I just want to narrow the stock rails 3 1/2" on each side. The reason for this is of course to fit some tires under my car bigger than the 275's that seem to be the biggest you can go without hitting something. The tires I would like to set under the car are the BFG Drag Radials of the 325/5015 variety. I think they are about 13" section width on a 10" rim and approx 28" tall. Moving 3 1/2" in on each side so that I can get 10.50W's under it for the strip. If anyone has done this or knows where I can get some good pictures of where they cut the frame and how they moved the rails in, I would really appreciate it. I know Mark Steilow did it on Malitude before Jody bought it, but but I havent been able to find any good info on how it was done. Thanks!

did that, but it doesnt say or show anything about "how" they did it. to me it doesnt look like you could move them in more than about 2 1/2" on each side, but Bill and Frank have both said that they moved them in 3 1/2" on each side for a total of 7". im going to need that much room for the rim/tire i plan on using. i know with minitubbing you can get a tire with an 11" section width under the car without touching the frame. the tire that i plan to run has a section width of 13" and i would like to have about 3/4"-1" of room around the tire for deflection. i hope i dont have to backhalf this car just to get some decent tires under it.

Are you wanting to keep the stock upper control arm mounts? That's can be the limitation of narrowing a stock frame.

You'll just have to do some measuring of your frame to see where you're at.
I'm about to do this to a '66. What year are you working on?
I know when Steilow did the '64, he narrowed the frame 2" per side, basically the width of the frame.
