muncie linkage question

I hate to admit it but I don't remember.....On a early muncie 4 speed (shift ears bolt on with nuts instead of bolts), do the linkage ears go up (above the stud) or down (below the stud) where the linkage connects to the shifter? As many times as I've done this you'd think I would have sense enough to remember...
