      splines on 700R4

Got 2 700R4s today and they both have 27 splines on the output shaft. Where does the 27 or 30 splines come into play. Is the 30 spline stronger.

the early ones had the 27 splines. i believe they switched in '84.
i'd guess that, just like axles, the larger spline count is stronger.
work in progress--for the next 10 years.

All 700-R4 transmissions have 27 spline output shafts. The difference is on the input shafts. 1982 - 1986 had 27 spine input shafts and 1987 - up had the 30 spline. I would recommend always sticking to the '87 - up 700-R4, the 30 spline input is better along with a few other items in the transmissions.
