      timimg chain installation

My question is, on a sbc does it matter if the timing mark on the cam gear is at 12 oclock in stead of at the 6 oclock positon? I know it maybe a simple matter to some of you guys but I was just wanting to know.

It doesn't matter as far as the cam or crank, but it will matter to the distributor. As long as the distributor is timed correctly, you are good to go.

I beg to differ.....your cam timing will be completely wrong and you just may bend your valves. Do it right. Cam at 6 and crank at 12

Sixx101.......You just need to remember that with the cam at 6 o'clock and the crank at 12 o'clock, you are at TDC on the compression stroke of the number 6 cylinder, not number 1.

It's been that way since Day 1. You just need to bring number 1 to TDC on the compression stroke before installing the distributor.

Buns is correct. Crank at 12 o'clock and cam at 6 o'clock is TDC on #6 compression stroke. If you rotate the crank 360 degrees, the cam will rotate 180 degrees and both crank and cam marks will now be at 12 o'clock and #1 cyl will be ready to fire. As long as the crank mark is at 12 o'clock, the cam mark can be at either 6 or 12 o'clock as long as the distributor is timed correctly.
