      Cam question..

I'm building a motor and need some advice on a cam...

the motor is a 383 small block, 11.3:1, ported 1.94 camels, either a performer rpm of vic jr, 650 DP, 4 speed behind it with 3.42's, and has to be good on pump gas... Any suggestions? how big will i need to go?

It's going to be breathing through a straw a bit with those little heads on that high compression motor, so I would keep the cam a bit smaller then I usually would with bigger heads. I would look in the 232 / 236 range and keep it in the 110 Lobe center range. Normal lift on a cam like that should be in the 500 lift range which should be ok and have no valve spring bind issues.

Down the road you might want to look for some 190cc heads, something like Holleys 187CC or AFRs 195s. it will wake up 100 horsepower with these heads and the bigger cam you will be able to run. With bigger heads we would shoot right up to the mid to high 240s duration and ease up into the 550+ lift zone.

Cool, thanks... Yeah I know the heads are small... But the price of the afr's are the same price I'm into the motor for..

Arf's, or even rhs's are on the list... as well as a set up for a dose of no2.

if you haven't gotten deep into the heads or intake yet check out Vortecs. the valves still aren't very big (1.94I 1.50E) but they flow very well. and they are pretty cheap. they do need minor machine work to go over .460 lift, but Scoggins-dickey carries them with mods for only slightly more than normal.
work in progress--for the next 10 years.
