Is vss needed for obd1 l99/lt1

Hi, I'm planning on putting a l99/lt1 style engine in a 64 chevelle. I'm doing this trying to keep costs at a minimum. Would a muncie or t5 be usable without the vss sensor or is it required for the pcm to work properly. I know I will have to have the pcm worked on and didn't know if it was a required sensor. Any help would be appreciated. thanks, George

I'm pretty sure that with a manual trans, the VSS just feeds the speedo on LT1 PCM's. with an auto trans the PCM uses the VSS for shift points.

Hi, For anyone wanting to know. I talked to pcmforless today and they told me that the speed sensor was not required for what I wanted to do. I can run any manual trans I want. Thanks, George

Do you know if the same thing applies to a 700r4, not 4L60E? I have an LT1 engine and 700r4 tranny that i want to put together.

Hi, I know you will have to hook up the cable for the throttle valve/kickdown , not sure of the exact name for it. The best bet is to just give them a call. I don't want to give you the wrong info. I talked to Bryan at (724)-349-4431 They are very nice to talk to. Let us know what he says if you do call. Thanks, George

      Hi,
Before I switched to a manual I had to use a VSS sensor from Jags that Run to get the right signal. Cost was close to $120 with the sensor as well. Here's a link to it. http://www.jagsthatrun.com/V8-chapte...ed-Sensors.pdf
I think I still have the adapter and speed sensor if you need one for your setup. LMK.

The VSS is only for auto transmissions that are controlled by the PCM. So if you do not have an 4L60E or newer trans, you don't need VSS. I believe 92/93 corvettes and fbodies still have 700R4s, so you might be able to find brackets to hold the TV cable.

You can also get the VSS that screws inline on the speedo cable and wires up as long as it gives right signal ratio.
The Vss was only used when the electronics came in for shift control and electric speedos.
OBD 1 only had TCMs seperate from the PCM and a few in the first years of OBD-II seprerate units networked.
Just depends on the year and model of vehicle.

On the T700 where the TV cable controls the shifts there are several functions in the ECM program that use a MPH (VSS ) signal

      http://www.thirdgen.org/techboard/di...-cell-4-a.html

There has been a VSS unit floating around on ebay that has provision for a cable hook up.$80
