      Engine Surging?

I just picked up a commuting car; ran fine the first two days, but is now surging. It is a Ford Festiva with a 1.3L, 5sp and carborated. From a start it surges through the first three gears, but idles great and will accelerate smoothly if I put my foot down (no surging). It is a tad scary at stop lights as I am never quite sure if I will get moving or end up in the middle of the intersection. The only thing that came to mind was too high a float level, but I do not smell gas and the idle should be effected. Any ideas? Thanks.

Surging is usually either too lean condition or too much timing.

You should drop in an LS1 engine. That should fix it.

Don't think that did not cross my mind when I opened the hood the first time! However I don't see how it would fit, maybe a turbo'd H.O. 4 banger though...

These cars have a cult like following in Europe, but were never extremely popular hear. No, from what I have read these engines last well into the 300k range and get 40+ mpg; and, afterall, I did buy it to commute and save driving the 11 mpg beast of a truck I have. I'll take a look at the timing and mixture later today, thanks.
