      Freshen' up a 6.0L

Has anyone taken a LSx motor with several thousand miles, or in my case an undetirmined amount of miles, and freshened up the motor. What I mean by freshen up is rings, bearings, ball hone, and have all the machined surfaces cleaned.

I figured I would go as far as to have the machine shop re assemble the short block, balance the rotating assebly along with the balancer and fly wheel. While the motor was being put together I would add a cam, ported oil pump, timing chain, and rod bolts.

I ended up getting the motor for free so I wouldn't mind spending a few hundred bucks to make sure it was bullet proof and dependable.

What do you think the machine work would run and am I waisting my time trying to freshen up a motor with some miles on it?

      Brian,
It's impossible to answer that question because your engine is not torn apart. I would inspect the motor internally by pulling off the valve covers and oil pan to see how it was maintained and if the crank bearings look good. Pull the spark plugs and see if they were all burning even. If all looks good you could pull it apart and just freshen it up or run it as is.

I rebuilt my '01 LQ4 about a year and a half ago. It was a low mile engine and I had it hot tanked, honed, new cam bearings installed and had the crank balanced. I rebuilt it myself with new pistons, all new bearings and gaskets, and upgraded everything else with performance aftermarket parts. The bearings and gaskets were quite expensive when compared to old sbc stuff. I think all the bearings and gaskets were almost $1000.00. My machine shop wanted $400.0 to put it all together but I did it myself as I like to get my hands dirty and I love engines.

Make sure to upgrade the rod bolts, oil pump and timing chain while your in the bottom end. I used ARP stuff everywhere.

if nothing is broken and you just want to re ring it and bearings and have the balance check and so forth, its cheap insurance and I would do it. nothing worse than sticking a motor in a car and then having a problem shortly after that..
