wich is wider
ids the 245 40 wider than the 275 40? how do i tell the width on todays new tires im old school when all there was was 50 fat boys and 60 series wanna bee,s? thank you

The first number is the width the second the Aspect ratio in %.
So a 245/40 would have a sidewall that is approx. 98mm tall. The 275/40 would have a 110mm sidewall. Taking a Yokohama AVS sport for width example the 245/40/17 is 9.8" wide and the 275/40/17 is 11".

In short the 245 is narrower and has a shorter sidewall than the 275.
