      Remove plastic chrome

      Anyone having a good way of removing the "Chrome" on plastic parts. I have a B&M shifter that i will remove the "Chrome" on the cover to smotth it out and paint. Can bead blast it at work but prefer to remove the "Chrome"

      I used 180 grit sand paper and sanded until the copper showed through. Then my painter put on an etch primer and base clear. It has been on the front of my daily driver for about 3 months and there is no sign of chipping or pealing.

      Soak it in Bleche white wheel cleaner, overnight or longer.

      This is easier then you think. Plastic parts are vacuum metalized. The "chrome" will come off easily with a little scrubbing from a ScotchBrite pad. Prep and paint as usual and you will have no problems.

      I cut thru the Chrome and peeled it off, about 2 hours of work....

      Plastic chrome

      This is how it look after cleaning. Now I will smooth out the B&M markings and add a round knob to the shifter Powdercoat in aluminum color the shifter.

      I read in a magazine years ago that Easy Off (oven cleaner) works. I'd try a sample first though.
