DOL adventure..

Well today i took a trip down to the local DOL to get my GTO title in my name, (i have abunch of documents i need because the previous own is passed away), well the lady at the DOL saw what i payed for the car and she said "well your car is worth 2000$ as junk so your going to have to pay the tax as if you bought the car for 6000$s. HUH?!? then she asked me if my car was going to the scraper, i said um no, she said well from what you paid it is.. i said the hell it is! She then said the only way to get around it would be to have a "mechanic" look at the car and give an estimate on what its going to take to put the car into working condition. ive NEVER heard of this ever. I was a little confused about the whole thing, and seeing how the previous owner is passed away i need a release of intrest, affidavit, cert. copy of death certificate. is there an easier way around this or not? i bougth the car from the deceased mans son...

Go back and ask her if they drug test for her job. Because she is high...

Then tell her that you are the mechanic and that you want to register it "NONOP"... or tell her its gonna take you 0.99 cents to fix it.

The only quick way for you to get a death cert without headache is to get a copy from the son that sold you the car... and have it noterized.

Post how this comes out. This is kinda note worthy for anyone that may get in this same situation.

Just call Broadway Title (1-800-464-3222 or broadwaytitle.com) and let them get you the paperwork and then just go down and register in your name. I went through the same thing with a Studebaker I bought out of Kansas. the previous owner died, was going to need power of attorney etc.Their (Broadway Title)paper work flew through my states process with no problems. The cost was 150.00. I have used this process 6 times since easy to deal with.

Well, i contacted the people i bought my car from (very good family friends of ours) and the deth certif they have is just a photocopy of the one his grandmother has, and now the grandmother is saying she doesnt know where it is... So im going to contact the department of health here in washington and get a certified copy. that and we have to make a new bill of sale that states i payed 6000$s for the car....

do you have to pay taxes on the purchase price as we do here in Texas? If so go the Broadway Title way and not have to fool with a the BS paperwork.

Well, paying sales tax on the car is a completely seperate issue than the death certificate.

Here in Washington, they make you pay sales tax on what THEY think is a realistic price for the vehicle. It doesn't matter what you actually paid anymore...

Hrm...seems like Washington has changed the rules since I lived up there, which I moved from there 3 years ago. When I got my chevelle licensed in my name from my mom (was my dad's that died 20 years ago) they didn't hassle me. Then again, this was alittle mom and pop DOL store in Arlington.

well, after doing some online research i came across the washington DOH (department of health) and saw that you can order certified copys of a death certificate for anyone as long as you know there full name and date of death and which city and county it was in. soo in about 2-3 days i should have a cert copy of the guys death certificate which is alot easier then having the people i bought the car from going and getting all the information together (they are in las vegas and its making things difficult)

Likewise up here in Ontario (thats Canada, not California). With the hobby taking off in the past ten years the Gov. now makes you get an appraisal of the purchase value if the vehicle is 20yrs old or more. If the appraisal comes in higher than what you paid, then that's what you pay taxes on. Apparently, too many people were selling $20,000.00 cars with $2000.00 receipts. Imagine that.

So this is a backdoor to evade tax charges on vehicle titles. Hmmm....

Here in Washington, they make you pay sales tax on what THEY think is a realistic price for the vehicle. It doesn't matter what you actually paid anymore...

They do that in IL as well. That's because so many people would
buy a car and say they only paid $500 for it to evade paying taxes.
So the state started that B.S. and it dings those that actually DID
really pay only a small amount.

Either way, I think as long as you have a bill of sale, they can't legally
charge you more then what you paid for it. Without a receipt they can
do whatever they want. I could be wrong.....I've never had to deal with it personally.
