      Steering Box Adjustment Question

      OK,

My steering box has a firm turning feel to it. I know many of you may like this kind of steering but I for one like to be able to turn the steering wheel with my finger with ease. Someone told me there is a way to adjust the steering box for a firmer or softer feel. Is this true? I have power steering on a 69 camaro. I heard it can be done on the top of the box via a set allen screw. Which way to a turn it? and how much is too much or too little? Thanks in advance for answering this.

      Dont adjust there...

      Toofun,

The screw on the top of the steering box is to adjust the "on-center" feel of the steering. If you loosen that screw you get more play in the steering wheel before the tires actually turn. This also feels like a dead spot when traveling in a straight line.

If you tighten it too much the car feels like it needs constant adjustment at the sttering wheel to keep it going in a straight line.

That screw has nothing to do with the steering effort. I am sorry but I think the only way to adjust the "firmness" of the box is to have it revalved.
