Dextron III or step up to the Dextron VI, but if you go to the VI you can never add anything else but VI to it. VI is basically a synthetic blend as I understand it from GM.

The bloke who rebuilt my trans in the Camaro was told to use dexron 4 by his parts supplier as 3 can make the wiring brittle. Dunno if thats true or not.

Switch to Dexron VI (with filter change) and then and then after about a month have it machine flushed at a shop with Dex-VI and dont be sparing with the fluid.
I have upgraded several of the performance trans owners I have sold to lately and since the shop I work at has a flushing machine its very easy to "swap" fluid.
Now while the VI is a better fluid you can also do een better and switch to the full synthetic from B&M and its even better in my book but costs more.
But then I have been advertising Evans NPG= and Evans NPG-R as coolant as it has no water and a much better no preassure boiling point.
We will spend $5k on atrans swap but not $150- $200 on coolant that wont let an engine overheat as easy?
      Good Luck

As for the difference about dex 3 and 4 no it shouldnt hurt the wiring. GM did have an issue in the wiring but only a few thousand got out.
Besides if you see Dex 3 its old stock anyway as most new cars require D4 or VI V wasnt out long enough for the companies to set up to run it as GM came out with new additive package.
