      junk yard BBC

wanting to build a 800hp turbo BBC. I'm searching my local junkyards here in south GA. Is there any certain style of motor or vehicle that I should be on the lookout for. Mostly old farm trucks and dump trucks around here. Did they come with 4 bolt mains? Also, How much hp/tq will the stock crankshaft hold?

If you get one out of a big truck. It might be a tall teck engine. I wouldn't go that route.

Just look for a 454 from a truck, suburban, etc. A two bolt main bbc is very stout.

If you have funds for a turbo, you should have funds for a better then stock crank.

See if you can find 2 or 3. You'll need some spares once you start blowing them up.

Try building one. Build it really well. It'll save you the hassle of changing engines down the road.

Actually I found one that is in a motor home. Engine and th400 trans for $1300 running. Some of my buds have been debating the strength of the stock crank. Will it hold 1000 hp? One of my so called engine experts swears that it will but I'm skeptical. I'd like to get a pro opinion.

I think the question of 'stock crank' and 800hp are just asking for trouble- go aftermarket- even on the block if you can afford it. The aftermarket blocks have thicker cylinder walls, better mains, and will actually make more hp.

68sixspeed said it. You are just begging for something to go wrong with turbo's and a cast crank. I wouldn't trust a cast crank over 500 horse, even though many have taken them to over 600 hp and equal tq. All it takes is a b.o.v to fail or an innocent over-rev and you'll end up taking out an entire engine. $400 is better now than $X000 later.

Those heads wont make much power anyway. A cast crank I agree is on the limit at 500/600 hp. Spend your money once and go for parts designed for the job in hand.

I remember hearing about a rash of bad (weak) cranks back in the early '80s in the 454s (that rates up there with the bad cams in the 350s back then too). I was in a John Deere shop at the time and one of the service trucks broke a crank behind #2 rod.

      I wouldn't trust a stock 454 crank even in a mild build-up.

Plan to build it for a 1,000 hp and then go over to Team Chevelle and ask Mike, (Wolfplace), for a quote for a good block!!

Please tell him, ol' pdq67 sent you to him..

And I recently asked him for a quote for a block that's ready to go to make a standard decked 700+ hp, 588"er!!
