ignition switch question for ppl with lt1s
i tryed firing my motor today it wants to fire up but once i let go of the switch when it starts the motor dies i dont know if i have any thing hooked up wrong on the back of the key switch or what so anyone with a lt1 in there chevy let me know how you have all your igniton stuff hooked up a.s.a.p wanna get her running

There are typically two circuits on the point type ignition wiring, the first comes from the switch itself, runs through a ballast resistor, and then to the positive side of the ignition coil. The second is from the starter solenoid that bypasses the ballast in order to compensate for the low battery voltage when the engine is cranking. My guess is that the ignition system you're using (factory lt1?), the ballast isn't needed and the voltage drops too low with it. Check the factory lt1 wiring, I'd almost gaurantee that it doesn't have a ballast resistor
08-20-2007 #3the wiring i have for it is the stock harness that i sent to lt350 and they added wiring any also took some out acording to there diagram its hooked up right but who knows. and all that you said makes no sence to me lol sorry iam new with all the wiring crap

08-23-2007 #4I used an American auto wire "classic update harness", and reworked the LT1 harness myself. I just cut the starter wire ( fat purple one) from the steering column and soldered it to the LT1's starter wire ( still a fat purple one, 38 years later, gotta love GM ). as for the other wires the PCM needs, make sure your getting constant power to the wires that need it, and switched power to the wires that need that, when the key is on.
