      66 Gto

I'm posting this for a friend of mine at work. He has a 66 GTO
      http://www.frantzenracing.com/FRForu...pic.php?t=1239

He rebuilt his trans with new sync rings and bearings. The gears didn't have any big damage/ pittings. It became better than it was, but since we not have any other trans to compare with we are not sure how much "whiining" noise it should make. 4th are ok since it direct but 1,2,3 makes some. We know it's a 40 year old trans.....but make these some noice or are they like modern boxes ?

      Thanks

I checked out your friends GTO on the link you posted. You fellas aren't from 'round here, are you? LOL

As for the tranny whine, I'm assuming he still has the Muncie 4spd. in it. There was an optional 4spd available that had the teeth cut on less of an angle (my memory won't cough up the option code right now), and as a result had more of a whine to it. I swapped one into an old Beaumont I had back in the early '70s after breaking one of the other Muncies (and I'm still blaming the shifter for that one). The whine was VERY apparent when I first drove it, but everyone else thought it was cool so I lived with it.

It's nice to see some of the Detroit iron being built overseas. It can be hard enough to do it here.

If there is a hard way to do something, I'll find it!
My other car is a Vega.

Thanks! We are from Norway. If anyone know more about this option code please post. Your answer sounds ok since everything was lokking ok. I drove the car today and it shifts easy and I like the whine!

      Olav,

The heavy duty transmission that Ken is talking about was the M22. The transmission gears were cut on a 20 degree helix as opposed to the approximate 30 degree angle of the M20 and M21 to support a higher torque carrying capacity and produced less end loading of the gear train. The design ended up creating a noisy whine predominant in 1st 2nd and 3rd gear. The m22 only came out of the factory with a 2.2 ratio first gear, this was considered a close ratio box for road racing. The whine is very distictive and especially noticable with a fairly quiet stock exhaust system. Removing the side cover an inspecting the gears is the only real way to determine if it is a true M22 gear set. So many of these boxes have been dismantled and put back together. Most collectors of Muncies will tell you it requires two to three junk boxes to try and make one good one and still needs a new small parts kit/ new bearings and syncros. The sliders and slider hubs have been hammered over the 40 years of banging gears not to mention the typical reverse gear that has half its teeth ground off. I wont even get into the main case issues, I can go on and on. The Muncie certainly served the hot rod community well though and held up to some serious abuse. Hope this helps! - Rich
