      Housing ends and backing plates

      I'm not sure this is the right section, Mods/Admins feel free to move it if needed.

      Anyway,

      I am planning on having Ford housing ends welded onto my 10 bolt rear axle assembly when I have the tubes welded to the pumpkin. I wanted to get rid of the c-clip setup. I'm also changing over to a Baer rear disk brake setup.

      The housing ends have the same bolt pattern ("small Chevy") as the housing ends currently on the stock rear. The new ends use the "large Ford" bearings.

      The caliper mounting brackets also have the "small Chevy" bolt pattern.


      Here are my problems/questions:

      The ID of the Ford housing ends (where the bearing seats) is larger than the opening in the caliper bracket. This means that the bearing will not fit through the caliper bracket.

      The bracket's opening doesn't seem to be small enough for me to cut a slot in the bottom and use it as a retainer.

      How wide is the Ford bearing and the standard Ford backing plate?

      Does the bearing typically stick through the backing plate and then a retainer plate is installed to hold the bearing in place?

      Should I machine the hole in the bracket larger, to allow the bearing to fit through?



      How did I get myself into this mess?

      I am going to guess you have moser ends? i ran into the same problem before i found out they make a flush mount end. pn 7900FM I believe?

      Or you can make a 1/8" spacer to fit the housing end. This will get the bearing flush. Its ok that the bearing doesn't fit through. You can use the backing as the retainer if it is steel. I have a 2001 Camaro backing plate on mine but am also using the steel retainer since it is made of aluminum.

      Have you made your axles yet?

      I do have Moser ends. The problem was not the ends, it was the brackets.
      The brackets were only a little smaller in ID than the ends. I did not think that there would be enough of a lip to act as a retainer. I also wasn't sure how the pieces would go together-I could have placed the plates on the axles before having the bearings pressed on, but I didn't like that idea-too much to take apart if I needed to pull the axles.

      It turns out that Baer has a new bracket out that mimics the Ford backing plate, but with the small Chevy bolt pattern. It installs on the housing ends, with an ID large enough for the bearing to slip through, and then a retainer plate is used, just like a typical Ford setup.

      I did find out that there is a "thin" bearing available that is 1/8" thinner, so the bracket could be used as a retainer plate. I wasn't sure that this would work, since the ID of the bracket is just about 1/4" smaller than the ID of the housings, which meant that there would be less than 1/8" of lip holding the bearing in. Might be enough, but I didn't feel like taking the chance.

      Don't want to high jack your post but I'm looking in to te same issue. Got also a Moser 12 bolt with ford end/c-clip eliminators. The only difference is that I went with Wilwood upfront. Will I encounter the same problem with the wilwood brackets as with the Baer ones?

      Moser also has a taper bearing end that has more side load(cornering) than others. Those berings are larger also.Just need to enlarge the hole or slot the bracket so it can go sideways over the axle.Their bearing retainer brackets are slotted like a C to do that.
