Spal controller Mark VIII install question
Hey guys,
Quick question. I just got the Mark VIII fan set up with a Spal-PWM controller. This is running on a TPI setup (using my existing temp sensor). Do I need to install a relay with this or should the controller be able to handle it? Should I stick with the 30 amp fuse or use different?

04-28-2007 #2I've talked to one of the techs at Spal and I was informed you can swap the 30-amp fuse out for a 40-amp fuse and the unit will be fine. It's internally able to handle up to 50 amps going through it. The Mark VIII fan RF64 will not draw any more than 35 amps @ full speed so you're safe there. This is just if you plan to use the AC input for the over-ride feature-otherwise, it's doubful you'll ever need to run the fan @ 100% but if you do, a 40-amp fuse will do.

04-29-2007 #3Great. Thanks for the info. Do you know what the preferred low and high temp settings for the fan control would be?
04-30-2007 #4The ideal temperature for both ranges can vary from motor to motor-especially if it's fuel injected, but I would say a low setpoint of 185 and then your high of 200 is a good starting point. So, with the fan disconnected, let your motor warm up to 185 and press/hold the low setting for about 3 seconds or until the LED stops blinking, then let the motor warm to 200 and press/hold the high LED setting until it stops blinking. Then, let the motor cool and connect your fan to the controller. Make sure the programming of the Spal unit is complete before driving. You temperature gauge may not exactly correlate with the Spal unit depending on your sensor location but it should cycle the fan pretty close to the readings you programmed into it. If you have a multimeter with the temp. probe leads, this should get you dialed in exact.

05-01-2007 #5Thanks for the info. I set it up to turn on at like 170 and high speed at 200. I will have to see how that does with a 160 deg. thermostat. So far it runs really good. I really like the controller and the fan rules. I will post pics soon.

05-03-2007 #7Got the controller working good. I really like the Spal controller. So simple to set up. I just used my factory temp sensor. Here are the pics of the Mark VIII install. She is a little dirty still, but it didn't turn out too bad.
